I've seen a lot of people being critical of the band so I thought I'd give it it's own thread. IMO, the MDB is way behind the LSU, UT, and even AU bands.
Thoughts?

They need to either mic up the band so everyone can hear them or focus less on woodwinds and more on brass to increase volume. A lot of the cheers are generic and stale. The halftime show often leaves me scratching my head because it doesn't make sense unless they are facing you. The band isn't a very good marching band, and I enjoy them a lot more when they are in the stands than on the field at the half.
The pregame show is pretty good although I personally despise Tusk.
I like that we play the Alma Mater at the ends of games now although I wish students would stay for it rather than leaving right after Rammer Jammer.

I went to the 2010 Tennessee game up in Knoxville. Sat in the upper decks and you could clearly see a distinct difference in quality. UT tore our band a new one on the field that night.

They do the same show every year. They should be better.

I think it's pretty weak we still play Basketcase before the 4th quarter. I don't know if it's so much the band as it is the lame song selection/cheers. I guess they're one in the same though.

It seems that nobody outside of the student section even knows the cheers. Most can't even sing the words to our fight song
I cant tell you how many times I'm the only one near me singing the fight song with the band.

Maybe if it was your first time to see the UT band, but seriously, after a half dozen times seeing it, the circle jerk drill played to C C Rider gets pretty old.

I think nobody cares because they're all pretty simple and uncreative and don't contain more than 2-3 words, I find it hard to believe even the most sidewalk fan couldn't pick up on them after a few seconds.

Yeah LSU does the same few cheers over and over. The only exception is their fans actually participate.
Edit to add:
"Geaux Tigers!" "Geaux Tigers!" "Geaux Tigers" "L-S-U!"
If only our cheers could be that complicated.

I knew this thread was coming eventually.....

Our band and cheers are stuck in the 1920s. At least we stopped doing 2 bits during pregame.
At this point, I'd rather hear more piped in music than our band.

It's a slight improvement. Most of time people just complain about the MDB without actually offering thoughts for improvement.

I think adding a mic for them up would add quite a bit to their show since everyone would be able to hear them. It is worth a shot anyway.

Bottom line, most posters on this board are completely ignorant to music and marching bands. Everyone thinks they are an expert because they have seen the movie Drumline or point to the Tennessee circle drill. In reality, the MDB and Dr. O is providing UA with an amazing product and also represents the university with class. It is sad the amount of unwarranted hate the MDB gets.
You will never see the MDB put an abomination of a show like this one Tennessee did in 2011 UT Wiz of Oz
You will see us do awesome shows like this medley of music from the band Kansas. In fact, the actual band Kansas came to see us perform it and can be seen at the end of this video in Bama championship gear. They thoroughly enjoyed it. Kansas medley
The MDB will also not embarrass our university like the Georgia band did last year before the SEC Championship game. While the MDB sat patiently in our seats following our morning rehearsal in the dome, the UGA band ran and wallowed all over the field. Some of them then atempted to climb the field goal posts and ended breaking them, resulting in the maintanance crew having to come out and repair them.
Dr. O actually tries to model everything we do after Saban and the process. We try to do everything the right way and with class. We really do put a quality product on and off the field and it's sad none of y'all realize this. I always try to avoid these band bashing threads b/c they really tick me off with the amount of off-base opinions. The average fan won't be happy unless the band is making some silly picture or recognizable shape with every formation we make, which is ridiculous.
In conclusion, wether you realize it or not, the MDB is a quality band that Bama fans should be proud of.

I have been in band in 3 years and have seen UT march the Same. Exact.Show. I hope they have it mastered after 20+ years. But let them play another show like THIS and suddenly it's a different ball game.

As far as LSU is concerned, yes they are a good band, but all of thier cheers consist of geaux tigers or LSU. Hell the only reason their "signature" song was so popular was becasue of the fans. I know that some of our cheers are stale, and I would LOVE to change them up a bit, but you half to realize this is a two way street, why don't yall create something on your own?? I doubt LSU's band director sent out an email to the students instructing them to yell "suck that tiger dick bitch" during neck. We try to mix up the song selection year to year, and y'all seem to like "All of the Lights" and "Right Above It" so get creative!

As far as Auburn is concerned, well we both did a James Bond show this year so compare the two your self.
AUMB
MDB
I'm not saying one band is heads and shoulders better than the other, we are both about even.

I certainly don't think the MDB is an embarrassment, and I realize we have a pretty good band. Honestly, a lot of my opinions on the band come from things former MDB members say and suggestions they have made. My biggest issue is that shows are directed toward one side of the field and are hard to hear or decipher if you aren't sitting in the right spot.

One of the GA's sat on the goal posts during the morning rehearsal before the 2009 SECCG

Of course, he didn't climb the posts, he just moved his pregame latter up against it, has his picture taken really quick, then hopped off.
And I doubt you will ever see them perform a show to both sides of the fields. How many bands actually do that?

You say this, but I remember a redneck woman show that was an abomination. That being said I'm not a hater on the band, I had friends in it and they work hard and have to spend most Sats sweating profusely in those uniforms
