Accountability. You don't do your job, you don't play. No exceptions. He's found a way to get these kids to realize that it isn't about them, it's about the team. And that's a pretty difficult task when you have a team full of elite guys. I know that's nothing earth shattering, but very few coaches can pull it off with year to year consistency.

So what is it?
Alabama football and Kentucky basketball historically share a common thread. Recruiting, coaching, facilities, and expectations all play a part but 2 things seem constant in constant success.
1) error free play compared to opponents
2) ability to win in the spotlight AND the target on your shirt

It is very close to the process that USMC uses, it is always evolving, and experimental. Spend some time on P.I... you will find that the battalions constantly change and trade methods and treatment of the trainees. They will actually make it rough for 50 guys, to find out if one guy is special. The upside of that is, you will probably find 6 or 7 other special ones in that platoon that you never even had your eye on. I have seen them make 1 guys life miserable, that they knew wouldn't give up, just so they can make his platoon members mad and see how they will react.

He leaves nothing to chance. He has his finger on everything. I took my son to the Alabama football camp this summer. One of the workers was talking to a few of us Dads. She said that they work all year on the camp. He has input on every little detail of the camp. And this wasn't the star studded camp. He was there all day everyday. Even working with the 8-10 year olds. He hollered at a couple of them to get off their helmet and pay attention.

He gives out deer antler spray and cash money.

Outworks people and has that genetic football genius gift. Also, he scares the shite out of kids. Some coaches have one or the other(i think spurrier has the genius part) but nobody else has the extreme high talent in both desciplines like saban.

He's the best in CFB right now, but Alabama has been lucky too. Teams have lost to get them in certain positions. They've had a good run of being an extremely good football team along with a good run of luck also.

Treat the press like garbage?

He pays his recruits, they don't test for steroids, only sec school I believe, and destroys the player future by hitting four days a week

What does he do differently?
He be's short.

A lot of coaches talk about coaching to a standard. Saban actually has the players buy into it. It is less about the opponent and more about playing to your standard on each play. Listen to the players. They sound just like him. It all sounds cliche, but they believe in it.

He does a lot of things really well. One of those things is keep some things quiet. Nobody cheats as well as Saban.

A very secret HGH program.

1. Loves to recruit and is good at it.
2. Loves to teach.
3. Actually very smart. He and Belichek talk once a week or so on football. He's running the Patriots defense or a variation at the college level.
4. Tough on discipline.
5. Pays attention to EVERY detail regardless of the score. Demand, repeat... demands or commands, a high level of attention from his players.

The secret is in the defense. He somehow teaches 18-20 defenders a year to think the way he thinks.
Hellen Keller could start at tailback and Alabama could compete for titles because their defense is smarter than everyone else's. They're more talented than everyone else and they're smarter than everyone else. Saban is a world class teacher, that's why he's the best. The worlds greatest football genius is a worthless coach if he can't teach his knowledge to the guys on the field. There are 11 extensions of nick Saban on the field every Saturday. Sometimes they slip up on their assignment, because they are only amateurs in the craft that they're learning, but 90% of the time there are 11 extremely talented nick sabans playing defense at Alabama.
Also, I'm sure it's been mentioned but fear is a great motivator. If you frick up at Alabama, Johnny 5 star will take your spot and never look back. The kids have to buy in, they don't have a choice.

It isn't recruiting. LSU, Florida, Georgia, even Auburn have all had top quality recruiting classes for multiple years. They haven't been able to sustain that level of dominance.
Yes it is.

He has been pretty opportunistic (ie. he doesn't miss a chance). With that said he is razor thin from not having won the SEC West since 2009.
