What can I expect? What are the laws on open container? What bars should I go to? What time do the bars close? Just any advice you can give an out of towner?

You can expect to drive right past it if you aren't careful

Have it In a cup and you will be fine. If you are not 21 be VERY careful at the bars since they will be swarming with undercover ABC cops. The cotton district is right off of campus and there are 6 bars in the district that are fun. Bin 612 is the largest and most fun of the cotton district bars.
There is downtown also you have zorbas, old Venice and they are fun.
Between the CD and downtown you have the halfway house they have a load of beers on tap and good food.
There is also ricks which usually has $1 on Saturday night but you are going to run into more of a redneck crowd there
Dave's darkhorse which is on the back end of the cotton district is on 182 and is a tavern with no windows it's always really fun.
On Saturday the bars close at 1 am but late night happens all over town.
Cowbells is open until 2 but they are way the frick out in the highlands.
Don't drink and drive they will have roadblocks everywhere
LIQUOR STORES
corkys located on highway 12
182 package store (located in a stip mall on highway 182) there is at texaco at one end of the strip mall.

I know the ONE TIME my brother and I went, you could not buy beer already cold from the convenience store, because, the lady said, the mayor owned the ice plant.
