Johnny Football looked a step slower than last year. Anybody else notice that?

Apparently he's actually going through all his reads this year, which is the amazing thing he needs to do to be the best QB in history.

At least that's what the commentators told me.

Thought the same thing, but he didn't play enough to really be able to tell. We'll find out the 14th

Saw somewhere that he put on 15 pounds and didn't do the run work to keep his speed up. May just be a rumor.

Speed, quickness, elusiveness....whatever you want to call it. The edge seemed to be missing.

Not sure if troll, but you're right (even if for the wrong reasons).

Johnny's special because of his elusiveness--his slippery change of direction is unprecedented.

But he's no burner. He never has been.

We didn't see him try to run much Saturday. So it's hard to tell whether he can still slip and slide through defenses at an elite level.

Just give a name, and I'll promptly explain why you're wrong.

You wouldn't be the first to say that.
Personally I didn't see it, but other people think as much. We shall see.

Oh, and Manziel has plenty of athleticism, but it's his vision and awareness that makes him special.

This discussion has been had on Ag boards as well. A few people saw what you saw; most say he looked the same. Some possible explanations for your observation:

- This year (as opposed to last) he's going through his progressions--which goes against his natural instinct to take off in the open field

- Adrenaline dump & heat (it was 104* at game time & only got hotter as the afternoon advanced) -- he may have lost the juice after that first run when he was ridiculously amped AFTER waiting a couple hours in the heat to play

- He's basically been working in the pocket since January. No running allowed in spring, summer, or fall camp. Could've been just a little rusty

- Added approx. 15# of muscle (entirely intentional. Johnny at 210# is more resilient than Johnny at 195#), which could impact his elusiveness

Again, most people disagreed with the "Johnny was slower" observation; but some saw what you saw. Ultimately, it's pretty hard to tell after only three scrambles. Guess we'll know more as the season progresses.

I noticed he put up 24 points in 5 attempts.
