Aaron Murray or Tahj Boyd: Who's the better QB?? Answer is Inside!

UGA opens the season at clemson, and there is plenty of preseason chatter from those two fanbases about the Heisman hopes of their two starting QB's.
Both QB's passed for over 3800 yards last season and found the endzone many times. They were incredible.
However, it's hard to compare two QB's when they are playing different teams. LUCKILY there is a team that both teams play every year, that's USC (and also GaTech, but f**k them!) So we can devise how the QB's might do against each other based on what they've done the past 3 years against USC.
Let's take a look...
2012 against USC
Murray: 11 for 31, for 109 yards, 0 TD's, 1 INT and 4 rushes for -9 yards. Only sacked twice for loss of 16 yards, 2 WB hurries and 10 Pass Breakups.
Boyd: 11 for 24, for 183 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT's and 17 rushes for 26 yards and a TD. Sacked 6 times, for loss of 30 yards, 2 QB hurries and 1 Pass Breakup.
Both teams ended up losing to the Cocks, (UGA lost 35-0 and clemson lost 29-17.) While neither QB had anywhere near a Heisman performance, let alone a good performance, Boyd's numbers were still better. Although, it is important to note that Boyd was playing at his own field.
It just might be a fluke, let's dig further...
2011 against USC
Murray 19-29 for 248 yards, 4 TD's, 1 INT, 1 Fumble, 2 Sacks, 0 QB hurries, 2 Pass Breakups and 6 rushes for 11 yards.
Boyd 11-29 for 83 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 5 Sacks, 7 QB hurries, 6 Pass Breakups and 11 rushes for -23 yards.
Murray had a MUCH better game in '11 than Boyd, still both teams lost to USC that year too (UGA lost 45-42 in Athens, and clemson lost 34-13.)
So it's tied up 1-1, good thing we have 1 more year to look at...
2010 against USC
Murray 14-21 for 192 yards, 0 TD's, 0 INT's, 3 Sacks, 2 QB Hurries and 0 Pass Breakups, and 6 rushes for -15 yards.
Boyd 10-18 for 73 yards, 0 TD's, 0 INT's, 1 Fumble, 3 Sacks, 2 QB Hurries, 3 Pass Breakups and 8 rushes for -18 yards.
For a 3rd time, both teams ended up losing to USC, (UGA lost 17-6 after never finding the endzone and clemson lost 29-7.) Really AWFUL game by both QB's, however, Murray's was still better...MURRAY WINS THE OVERALL for Least Awful Performances Against USC!!!!
Congratulations to the Dawgs! We've used 3 years worth of data to show that Murray is a better QB than Boyd, by comparing their performances against the same opponent (USC.) Only bad news is that both QB's have to play USC a 4th time.
Will both QB's go down as two of the BEST record breaking QB's in their school and possibly conferences history? Possibly. However they will share more than that, they both will have NEVER beaten USC.

They also have common opponents vs GT you should check out.
But I understand the point of this thread. Those 2 are 0-5 as starters vs us.

I see your point, but to be fair, UGA was able to dip out of playing a "tough" SECw opponent again in '12, so it's hard to compare what Boyd did against them vs what Murray could've/would've/should've done against them.

Well that settles that. Got 4 tickets for sale for the UGA USC game if anyone is interested. Discounted price for any UGA fan willing to buy with defeat being imminent.

I agree, if you look at his numbers vs the same opponent over 3 years, Murray has better numbers. Sandwich brought up a good point on the dawgrant thread, that Boyd's stats are very inflated b/c he plays in the ACC.

Okay so since you moved this thread to the main board, I'll copy/paste my same reply from the Gamecock board:
*******************
That transitional stuff works some times ... not often and not in this case IMHO.
Boyd plays an easier schedule, week-in and week-out.
Murray endeavors to compete in a much tougher league.
Murray has been to Atlanta twice, while playing in the much tougher league.
Boyd has been to ... hell, I honestly do not even know where the ACC CG is played, but I think Boyd has taken Clemson there at least twice in the past few years, correct?
So I look at talent. Murray had Green for two years, Boyd has had Watkins for two years and has probably had the better overall receivers for three years.
Better offensive lines ... that goes to Murray IMHO, by far.
So then I break it down by what I see on the football field, in terms of sheer talent.
Murray has a better head for football, is the better passer mechanically and runs with the ball fairly well for a white guy.
Boyd is the better overall athlete, a fair to middlin' passer and an excellent running QB when he wants to be against the average defenses he normally faces in the ACC with the exception of UNC last year and FSU pretty-much every year.
It's a tough call. If I am drafting a QB tomorrow and I had to choose between Murray and Boyd, then I go with Murray.
If I had to pick a QB to play college ball in a Spurrier led offense, I'd go with Boyd. But I'm not sure Boyd would have anymore success at Georgia playing for Richt and Bobo than he has had at Clemson.
On the other hand, I do not believe Murray would be as successful as he has been playing for Spurrier ... but he might have been far more successful, in a big way, playing for Chad Morris at Clemson. I think Murray would have eaten'up the world at Clemson under Chad Morris.
Given all of the above, I think Murray is the better overall QB, but not by much. What I really like most about Murray is that he is a gamer. I don't like the purse wearing - I thought he got a bad rap after our game last year by the UGA fans, but I like Murray's style of play and the fact that he is a gamer.
Boyd, he too is a gamer but less so than Murray. Boyd is willing to sacrifice to a degree, but he also has a tendency to get a little gunshy. I've also seen him make a few critical mental errors that I would not expect Murray to make in the same situation.
So my answer is, by the smallest of margins, Murray.

Do you think Boyd would have been even better in UGA's offense and Murray would have been even better in clemson's?

No, Boyd would not have been better in UGA's offense under Bobo, but yes, Murray could have been better in Clemson's offense, against Clemson's weak conference competition, with Clemson's wide receivers, than Boyd.
