@CecilHurt: Saban: "We really had a good week this week...Maybe it was going to Washington, I don't know."

Xzavier Dickson is out for A-Day and may need patella tendon surgery, per Saban.

He already lost his job to Devall, but this could put the kibosh on him trying to get it back. Depending on the severity, recovery can be up to 6 months on that surgery.

shite. That's mid-October and a likely medical redshirt.

If he's able to play in mid October I doubt we'd redshirt him. Most of our guys seem to come back from injuries earlier than the normal times too

I really hope they are just getting the injury bug out of the way early lol.

Lasy year was kindof brutal the way they started to pile up.

I feel for him but losing him may be better for our pass rush out of 3-4. He is a good run stuffer but not really in pass rushing. Maybe one of our incoming or younger players can fill his spot and when he comes back he can play DE.

Perhaps. My only concern with a base with Devall is he didn't look all that good against the run last season when he had his chances, but he's gotten a little bigger and he's more experienced, maybe that's changed.

Just means more time for Jeoffrey Pagan, Dalvin, and Kirven (although KK needs to add some more weight)

He was a rush specialist, so his shots at stopping the run were likely few and far between.

Devall is a former MLB, he offers a bit more standing in base than Dickson. Dickson looks like a LE trying to play OLB, works well with setting the edge, but square peg-esque otherwise. Bigger is the way to go, but only if it doesn't hurt the pass rush.

When they moved Dickson back to OLB, he remained behind Devall for the remainder of the Spring. I think they like what they got in Devall, they already know what they have in Dickson...

Yep, but he did have a decent number of chances, and in a couple of blowouts bad teams were still blowing him off the line, BUT he put on around 10 or 15 pounds and is another year removed from High School, so he should undoubtedly be better at run D this year.

I think '07 is the last time the fanbase has been collectively worried about the run D, I don't expect that to change. However, the passrush has been just the opposite of that. If he improves the latter, a dip in comparison to the former won't matter too much.

It's not like Dickson was Red Bryant out there setting the edge anyway, just a solid player...

Yeah, not worried that much, Mosley could be around the corner and nailing backs behind the line even if Devall got blown off, but I just don't wanna end up in a close game against someone like Marshall from Georgia who could potentially outrun all of our DBs, and Devall get blown off the line to break him open. I'm sure he'll do fine though.

IF he had to RS because of this, who will benefit on the roster with more playing time?

ETA: Perhaps there would be a better way of wording that considering you guys are saying he lost his job to Devall.

Well, the base D against UGA wasn't exactly shutting down Gurley and Marshall the whole game. Dickson and Hubbard were getting re-routed on plays by Jay Rome, a TE. I'd take that more serious than garbage time play, but that's still just a small portion of plays.

The talk at scrimmages seems to convey it was the right move, especially people who watched the last one.

Chase thinks Dickson should be healthy by fall camp. Barring injuries this Saturday, I think pretty much everyone will be healed up by the end of fall camp at the latest.
