Is there a better, more proven back-up QB than USC's Dylan Thompson?

RS Junior Dylan Thompson 2012 season stats:
52%, 1,027 yards, 10 TDs + 1 rushing TD, 2 INTS
Got his first start against ECU after Shaw was injured and threw for 330 yards w/ 3 TDs and no INTs.
Second start came against Clemson and in a clutch performance he threw for 310 yards w/ 3 TDs and 1 INT.
He also saw significant minutes against Michigan in the Outback bowl completing 7 of 10 passes for 117 yards w/ 2 TDs and no INTs.
Outback Bowl game-winning, 11 win season-clinching, TD throw to Bruce Ellington against Michigan
Shaw is certainly our starter going into the 2013 season but (knock on wood) if he gets injured or can't play for some reason Gamecock fans feel very comfortable with Thompson coming in.

More proven? No
Better? Maybe, but no one really knows

Brandon Mitchell says hi.
ETA: He had a QB rating of 154.3 in 2011. 22-33 passing. Hasn't played as much as above mentioned QB, but I'd bet a lot of money that he's better.

Um at this point I would say no. There's a number of backups around the league that are more highly rated . Of course most of that has to do with Thompson coming here as a basketball recruit. So I would say no.

Brandon Mitchell says hi.
If he was so good, he would've been the quarterback when Tyler Wilson missed time last year. Not the Brandon Allen kid.

I usually despise the 2 qb system but with Thompson and Shaw, I actually have come around to embrace it (if we decide to use it). If one is doing bad, I feel comfortable giving the other a shot. It worked alright with Michigan

b mitchell might be better than both of usc's qbs. i know shaw is a 'gamer'- i'll give him that much but dang he makes it look ugly as sin.

Can't blame you one bit for that. I think our situation might be a bit different in that both are capable and have been proven as starters where LSU's werent exactly like that.....

So you guys had a back up QB better than Thompson -- who beat a top 10 team on the road?... And why didn't he play when Wilson went down?
I realize the guy was playing WR, but if he was such an awesome backup (and clearly better than Allen), why wasn't he playing his natural position?

Congrats on having the 15th best QB in the conference.

I'd put Thompson over half of the QBs in the SEC

I'm sure there are some backups in this league that could start for other teams.

Thompson is probably top 10... and it's not like he racked up numbers in meaningless minutes... he had the game in his hands at Clemson and against Michigan.
He's proven more than QBs at several schools... and probably more than some starters like Franklin for Mizzou last year.

I agree. The guy came here as a basketball recruit. I think the more experience he gets the better he will be.
