I would also categorize those dudes as inhuman.
The real victim here?

Things were getting too serious

I'm sure ESPN had a little something to do with this, they wanted Te'o to win every freaking award out there. What's more embarrassing, getting duped into thinking you had an online girlfriend or just simply having an online girlfriend?

Reagan Mauia, an Arizona Cardinals fullback, said he believes Kekua existed because he met her in person when he and other Polynesian teammates and Pittsburgh Steelers star Troy Polamalu went to do charity work in American Samoa in June 2011.
"This was before her and Manti," Mauia said Wednesday evening. "I don't think Manti was even in the picture, but she and I became good friends. We would talk off and on, just checking up on each other kind of thing. I am close to her family. When she was going through the loss of her father, I was -- I offered a comforting shoulder and just someone to bounce her emotions off. That was just from meeting her in Samoa."
Mauia said Tuiasosopo -- whom Mauia believes is Kekua's cousin -- introduced the two. After the initial meeting, Mauia said he met her at an "after-party" for all of the athletes involved in the camp.
"She was tall," he said. "Volleyball-type of physique. She was athletic, tall, beautiful. Long hair. Polynesian. She looked like a model ... "
He said it is his understanding that Kekua's mother is operating her Twitter account. He said he'd never met her mother.
When told by a reporter that she apparently might not have existed, Mauia said: "No, she is real."

Exactly. It doesn't make sense at all.

Arizona fullback says she is real? Apparently the Social Security Administration disagrees

I think when people say "the hoaxers" and use vague terms without agreeing to release the copies of the report, it's shady.
And notwithstanding the shadiness, at the end when he cries and he says that Te'o will never be able to trust the same way again, it's probably not a bad thing that he has learned not to trust random people on the internet.

May not be a huge piece of the puzzle.....
But does anyone know when Manti made his relationship public? I keep seeing references that this was a 3 year relationship. My thinking is if he has talked about his "gf" for 2-3 years I am more inclined to believe him. If we just start hearing about it within the last 8-10 months I am more inclined to believe he was in on the hoax.
If he was talking about her 3 years ago, that is a long time to carry out a hoax(not impossible), in hopes of having a good enough season for it to be of some "benefit" during his senior year.
If he just starts talking about his 3 yr relationship this season then his involvement is more plausible...

I think it makes him look like a moron, IMHO. I just don't see how someone can have a "relationship" with someone, for what, 3 years and never see or talk to them.
But, with all of the statements given in the fluff piece interviews, they had met in person the first time that he communicated with her in any way, iirc.
He just needs to come out with the truth instead of digging this hole any deeper with more dishonesty.

IMO it's a huge American Samoan conspiracy. They have been plotting to over-throw the government for years now, and this is just the tip of the iceberg...

Guess she doesn't want to talk right now.
