It's weird that ESPN apparently knew about "the hoaxers" and still ran their fluff pieces leading up to the BCS game.
I was just thinking the same thing. If they knew about it before the game, why did they continue to sensationalize the story?

Here is part of the deadspin article. This is just really shady.
quote:
Sept. 10, 2012: Kekua is released from the hospital; Manti's father, Brian, congratulates her "via telephone" (South Bend Tribune).
Sept. 11-12, 2012: Te'o's grandmother dies in Hawaii. Later, Kekua dies in California. Or is it the other way around?
"Te'o's girlfriend, Lennay Kekua, died Sept. 11 of complications from leukemia. His grandma, Annette Santiago, died after a long illness less than 24 hours later," according to the Sept. 22 South Bend Tribune.
No, Annette dies first, according to the Oct. 12 South Bend Tribune. In fact, Lennay lives long enough to express condolences over the death of Annette:
Less than 48 hours later [after Lennay's release from the hospital], at 4 a.m. Hawaii time, Kekua sent a text to Brian and Ottilia, expressing her condolences over the passing of Ottilia's mom, Annette Santiago, just hours before. Brian awakened three hours later, saw the text, and sent one back. There was no response. A couple of hours later, Manti called his parents, his heart in pieces. Lennay Kekua had died.
Or does Kekua die three days later (New York Post)? Four days (ESPN, CBS)? In any case, according to Te'o's interview with Gene Wojciechowski in a segment aired during the Oct. 6 episode of College GameDay, Lennay's last words to Te'o were "I love you."

Why let the facts distract from a good narrative?

I'm surprised they didn't see a Hawaiian Kookoo Rainbow rise above Miami when he was running on the field.

It was there in his heart.
How did the media not put this together earlier? It's not like ESPN was the only one to do their typical no diligence...NYT, CBS News, and the list goes on. I mind as well just read The Onion from now on. Just as factual and more entertaining.

Do you think that he will ever live this down?

We aren't even sure if Manti Te'o actually exist. I definitely don't recall seeing him in the National Championship Game vs BAMA

So i'll poll you all. Who here believes he was in on it and who here believes he's a bigenoughmoron to "fall in love" with someone without so much as skyping her?

Having America discover your gf was fake? I'm sure he'll stop being the butt of jokes soon (if you define soon as never).

This is just really sick.

That was my first thought. Usually when they do their sappy tearjerker man sports stories, they try to find the family of the girlfriend. Like, when Carson Tinker's girlfriend died, we saw her parents interviewed, her pictures when she was little, her pictures at Alabama, etc.
I can't believe that no one tried to find any of that. Seems like it would have been pretty easy to figure out. It makes you wonder who knew what when...

Breaking News: Lance Armstrong to teach Public Relations and Crisis Management at Notre Dame in the fall. Manti Te'o to assistant teach.

Uh huh. Either they weren't doing their job, or just ignoring the obvious for a story.

That's what I want to know. It's so bizarre. It's like Christmas came back for seconds.

The only way that Te'o could have been tricked was if there was actually a girl who visited/physically/visually interacted with him and claimed to Lenny but was actually someone else and faked the whole death story to break it off.

I'd be shocked if he wasn't in on it.
