The variations of the option offense are really starting to seem silly. Especially after watching Navy in Ireland, also Paul Johnson in the first drive. Has anyone ever run that in the SEC and been successful? Excuse my ignorance.

How, exactly, is it a gimmick?

Bear Bryant won quite a few games with the wishbone.

not necessarily the spread, but the variation that Navy runs, where it's almost always an option play.

Every offense besides the option offense is gimmicky.

I think Nutt used it with Matt Jones.

Do you think that is why they call it the triple option offense?

A true wishbone or read based option is not. The problem with most of the teams that do it is they fail to have a throwing game as well, and when you need points, it can be too slow.

What exactly do you mean by gimmick? There is absolutely no trick in the option. However it exposes teams who aren't discipline.

True triple option in the SEC would be Alabama and Mississippi State. True triple option in the SWC would be Texas and Texas A&M. There were many variations of the VEER/option but few ran the true triple option. Enlighten me!

Georgia Southern rushed for 300 yards on Bama last year with a triple option offense

Not sure if I'd say the same now, but honestly Paul Johnson was my #1 choice for Bama circa Dec. 2006 (mostly because I didn't think we could get Saban - Jim Grobe was my #2 at the time)

To be fair, if everyone ran a triple option they wouldn't have gotten anywhere near that much yards. It's a very different thing to prepare for and that showed against Bama.

The wishbone ruled the 1970s and much of the 1980s.
