-Offense: B+
Play calling didn't help much in the first half; we were running well but tried to go deep too often. We improved vastly in the 2nd half because we relied on the run and intermediate passing game which settled Murray down and allowed him to hit the deep passes. Liked what I saw from the running game (aside from the injury to Malcome), even if it was just Buffalo. The OL did an adequate job; not truly dominant but it was the first start for 2 of our linemen and they did alright. Burnette and Theus will be fine for Mizzou.
-Defense:C
There wasn't a whole lot of "good" from this group aside from Jarvis. The blitz packages and play calls were vanilla but there's no reason Buffalo's OL should've gotten the push they did. Jarvis Jones had 1.5 sacks and a few TFLs while Damien Swann looked good at corner, but all in all it was an EXTREMELY underwhelming performance. Hopefully Ogletree and perhaps Rambo will be back next week because walk-on Safety Connor Norman is bad...really bad.
-Special Teams:B
Our punts looked pretty good, even though there was a break down in coverage on one. Marshall Morgan did an alright job on KO's but his FGs and PATs really need to improve. I liked what I saw on returns from Gurley and Swann.
-Overall:B
We need to improve a LOT, otherwise we might finish up with a 7-5/8-4 record with our weakass schedule. At least we didn't look Florida-bad.

These grades are based on where I think we can be if we play up to our potential and how I think we actually played.
Offense: C
fumbles, piss poor run blocking half the game, We allowed a sack, Jacksonville state is shitty we should have scored on just about every possession. Our offense could be the best in the nation if they get their shite together.
Defense D- We really gave up 24 points to jacksonville state. I know short fields and what not but we didn't even get a chance to pull out our first string. If there was a question mark during the offseason the result was a big resounding we aren't there yet and really didn't look that close
Special teams B-
good returners again although they didn't break any big ones yet they eventually will, piss poor blocking so far If johnson can't get to the 20 yard line then no one blocked, there was that beautiful punt that we apparently blocked with breedings own foot somehow. I was sure that Jacksonville state got ahold of that but I guess not, We also blocked a Field goal which is good

Mizzou
Offense - C+ The lower grade really isn't their fault, it was just hard to judge because of the opponent and with as many defensive and special teams touchdowns that were scored, it was difficult to see any real rhythm develop. Most encouraging thing may have been the play of the back up QB, knowing he can step in and play.
Defense - B 2 defensive scores but at times it still seems like our best defense against the pass is either an inaccurate passer or a receiver that can't catch. Seemed like I heard Kip Edwards name a lot and that's not a good thing. He's coming off of an injury so hopefully he can step it up.
Special Teams - B+ Would have been an A if not for a missed extra point. The kicking game could be something that haunts us all year.

Grade your team
Offense

For Bama, I give:
Offense - A .. Ran the ball at will, looked good passing, good decisions by McCarron. Overall, very pleased.
Defense - A- .. Great run defense, pass defense was good, but spotty at times. Youngness in the DB's showed in a few plays. Milliner looked great, as did Lester.
Special Teams - C .. I'm not sure we could kick into the endzone from the 50 yd line. Foster nailed a nice 50+ yarder, and just missed another over 50. Punting was solid and coverage was overall, pretty decent.
Penalties - C .. First game, lots of new starters. Some were expected, maybe had more than they should have though. IMO, a couple were iffy personal fouls, when they were good hits. Nico's on Denard was one example. He didn't hit him in the head and his feet weren't even on the turf from the throw, but he was called for a personal. I expect this will show the biggest improvement moving on.
How do you grade your team?
1. Agree with you about the offense...A
2. A- for the defense. Too many lapses in pass coverage, any one of which can get us beat in two weeks.
3. Now I'm not sure which game you saw. Special teams...A. Who gives a crap about touchbacks with the new rules? On 8 kickoff returns, Michigan's average starting point was the 23.75 yard line, not counting a block in the back penalty. Two returns were to the 15 yard line or less. Only one was beyond the 30. I'll take those results over an automatic touchback and giving them the ball on the 25 any day. The risk-reward of stopping them inside the 20 as opposed to busting a long return is worth it.
I'll also take 50% of FGs beyond the 50.
As for punting...more than solid and coverage a helluva lot more than decent. 47 yard average on 4 punts, two inside the 20, with one downed on the 2. They only returned 1 punt for 3 yards. I'm not sure what more you would want from our punting game. And Jones averaged 14 yards per punt return.
Penalties...I'd agree with you there...C.

Offense: B+
Pass game was great but our offensive line could've done a better job blocking
Defense: D+
Run defense was okay but our secondary is god awful
Special teams: B+
Would've gotten an A had Breeding not shanked that punt. Regardless special teams should be very good for us this year. Holmes looked great on that return even though he was down

OFFENSE:
QB: B-
Marked improvement from Russell, but stared down receivers a bit too long, and didn't show much in the long ball game.
RB: A-
Perkins got everything he wanted except a big breakout. Robinson looks strong and mean.
TE: B+
The few times Green was targeted, he made fantastic catches.
WR: A-
Zero drops, and superglue gloves from our receiving core. Only complaint is that many of the catches were so impressive due to lack of separation.
OL: INC
Great push, gave the QB plenty of time, but our starters played so little that it's hard to really tell. Still not completely sold on Clausell at LT.
DEFENSE
DL: A
Deepest position on our team and it's not even close. Collapsed the pocket quickly no matter who we had in. Would have liked to see them get to the QB a bit more.
DE: B+
Autry stood out as a legitimate defensive playmaker. Nobody else caught my eye.
LB: C+
We used lots of combinations of linebackers at various positions, and playing the vanilla zone, we let far too many guys get open across the middle. Speed at this position may be lacking.
DB/S: INC
Would be easy to give a good grade based on 2 pick 6s, but our starters were never really thrown at. Hyped as one of the best secondaries in the country, but weren't able to prove it one way or the other, especially playing the soft zone.
SPECIAL TEAMS
K: D+
Still not able to hit a long FG or kick through the back of the endzone.
P: INC
Only 1 punt, but downed it nicely inside the 10.
RETURNS: C
Did not even attempt to play safe. One awesome catch on the run for about 50 yards from Bumphis, but 2 muffed catches that we were lucky to grab onto.
Overall Assessment:
Depth, depth, depth! Probably the deepest team at every position I've seen at MSU (not that that's saying much). Still some questions on the Oline and giving away so many completions across the middle could be of some concern. Most impressed with our receivers hands, and with all of our freshmen that got playing time.

I'll put it this way. If we were a Memphis high school player, we'd need an illegal grade change to stay eligible.

Offense - A+ 78 plays, 565 yards (330 passing, 235 rushing), 1 turnover(tipped ball), 1 penalty.
Defense - C- Bad first half. Much better 2nd half. Only allowed 100 2nd half yards and one doo-doo td in the last minute. Allowed 337 yards total.
Special teams - B- Rose missed a 29 yarder and had a 58 yarder blocker. We averaged 47 yards/punt, had some solid returns, no fumbles, and 5 touchbacks.

For LSU, I give:
Offense - B- .. almost 10 ypc on rushing, Passing game is there but Mett has some on field issues to work out. He was on target but has got to calibrate his Pocket clock - held the ball too long and got his arse busted for it. This was the difference in playing mock games with no-hit rules on QB's and Live Action. He forced another pass down on the goal line that got picked - seems to be a tendency he needs to rid himself of. He did pretty good given the wacky week in BTR this week. Two other major backs did not see the filed (Ware and Hill).
Defense - B .. except for a couple mistakes on pass coverage that resulted in two scores they shut NTSU down. NO SACKS from two all-american DE's??? Lots of youth at LB and and CB. Bama homeboy Kwon got a fumble recovery - wouldnt have even seen the field in Dallas.
Special Teams - A .. Wing was out for the game but everything else was spot on!
Penalties - D .. First game, lots of new starters. 10 penalties. Two TDs called back
