Landon Collins wants to be a nickelback

Collins made up his mind to head to Tuscaloosa two years ago, but was persuaded to wait on making a decision. At that time, mother and son agreed on that destination for Louisiana’s best prospect. That changed when Saban talked about using Collins as a nickelback, instead of an every-play safety.
“A nickelblack plays 50-80 percent,” Justin said. “Landon is a 100-percent player.”

I tried to get this discussion going on the LSU RB, but everyone seemed preoccupied for some reason. Is the nickel a big part of Bama's defensive scheme, or is this the Tyrann Matheiu effect (who is given the freedom to make plays all over the field at nickelback)? If it's the latter, I find it VERY impressive that Saban can recruit a 5 star safety by offering him a situational position.

I thought everyone hated nickelback.

Saban knows to say whatever, but I read "Saban had me at hello" when I read that.

The nickel has been a crucial position since Saban has been at Bama.
Javier Arenas had a big year in '09 switching in and out of the slot. They've used Menzie the last 2 seasons in a similar role, shifting him in and placing Milliner outside.
It's basically a starting position now...

We already use it a lot, but with the talent at DB, we'll be capable of doing it all game if we have to. Basically once these guys get the playbook down, we should be able to run whatever formation we want.

Is it a traditional nickel with four down linemen, or a specific formation out of the 3-4?

With all the spreads out there the nickel back has become very important. You need fast hard hitting backs to defend against it. That is why Saban can recruit so many DBs is because he saw how shut it down.

collins in the nickel would mean:
S - HaHa
S - Lester(NFL) or Sunseri
CB - Milliner
CB - Dixon or Fulton
NB - Collins
tons ot athleticism, but not a lot of experience especially if Lester leaves.

absolutely. so is fulton, perry, and jarrick williams. we've got lots of guys who could get playing time in the secondary and this group of guys has a little bit different skill set so I'm interested to see how the personnel groups develop with this batch

Jarrick Williams and Nick Perry? Are these guys just not living up or what? I mean I know Ha-Ha was a 5 star. But Sunseri, Collins, and Ha-Ha all over guys that have been there longer?

Well Sunseri has proven he's ahead of Williams/Perry already.
Collins and HaHa are the top safeties in the country in their respective recruiting classes. it could be that I'm just being a prisoner of the moment in regards to Collins, but I fully expect that HaHa will be a starter after spring camp breaks.
but I'm not ready to give up on Williams and Perry just yet either. both guys are very talented and could be starters here or at any other program

This doesn't mean that Landon Collins would be an extra DB, he would just slide over to that crucial spot in nickel defense. LC is a starter in base as well.

I think Nick is the best con artist I've ever seen. He certainly can convince young minds that he has his priorities in order, but I've never gotten the impression that loyalty, integrity and strong family values were virtues of his(then again neither was da bear). Some of Nick's players will make it but most won't, because the competition will be stiff and many of those kids are there for the wrong reasons. He's "all in" as much as auburn was in 2010 because he doesn't have the patience to deal with the people around him and the things he can't control, like winning on the field. His coaches leave for lesser job opportunities (if they can get away w/o being deep sixed, processed, hated on, or whatever by the little nicktator) and Terry tells on him every chance she gets. That's not a recipe for longevity and to me, its really kind of sad. No way he can consistently beat a group of men that have great leadership across the board and a common goal. That's what being a team is all about.

I'm not mad, just interested in seeing how long it lasts. I'd bet the house that Calipari has more longevity at Kentucky. These next five years better be great for bama football with as much as you have invested. That school is as trendy as it gets under the present circumstances.

It's also really sad and unfortunate how Katrina has affected some of these kids, destroying families and making kids feel like they had no home other than what complete strangers could provide them. That kind of experience makes it pretty easy to call some other place a second home, because there really is no first home. One son goes to prairieville with dad while the other stays with mom in N.O., like somethin out of a movie. I really have to commend Miles for staying the course and handling these situations with class and dignity the way he has with McKnight, Fluker, Sylve and Collins, among others. Meanwhile, Nick has capitalized as most of us expected he would. He and urban are very much alike in that regard. Both are extremely opportunistic.
