Mike is looked after by the large animal vet school. Does Bama have one? I was under the impression they were only a few in the country.
Obviously the lack of a large vet school wouldn't prohibit having an elephant, but having one would certainly make it easier.

This has probably been mentioned already, but only the Indian Elephant is trainable. The African Elephant is considerably larger and is not trainable. The reason I say this is because the elephant used for all of the BAMA pictures, mascots, apparel, etc. resembles the African Elephant.

Alabama wouldn't have to buy one. They can hold a contest with the contestants coming from their female fan base.

Because The University of Alabama and its supporters have evolved past the point of keeping a wild animal in captivity and demeaning it by using it as a mascot for a ballgame. We leave that type of behavior to the more uncivilized schools.

There's literally a thread/inside joke before each season on Bama's scout site from the same poster claiming that Alabama is getting a live elephant mascot this year and naming him "albatross".
