Not sure the logic behind putting a conference that soon won't exist above the best conference in college football by far. ESPN continues to amaze me

Good point, but I just view it as fuel for the fire. Outsiders are foaming at the mouth to cut the legs out from under the SEC.

I think the most complete team is in the Big 12. However, from top to bottom, the SEC still has to be the best conference.

Yet aTm got aTm's twice last year by SEC teams yet they overrate them. No biggie, they will soon become the next Arky in the SEC "good for two years and bad for 6"

The SEC only has two elite teams this season. Bama and LSU. Everyone else is average to awful.

You could also make the argument that the big 12 only has one elite team this year.

True.
I never really put much stock into what ESPN says...

It's probably because Ole Miss, Kentucky, Georgia, Auburn and South Carolina have all looked shitty in OOC play. Don't worry, LSU will put the SEC back on top with a solid W against West Virginia.

We created this system to grade conferences based equally on two key components, the quality of the upper tier schools AND the depth of the conference. The AP (or Coaches) poll is a good proxy for the strength of the top schools in each conference. On any given week there are roughly 35-45 schools given a positive voting number, that is, at least one 25th place vote. This means about two-thirds of FBS schools are treated equally and given zero AP points. So, only conferences with these elite schools will get any points at all and only the elite of the elite will receive the major points given out if you can make the top ten.
The second aspect of this system is designed to proxy the depth of the conference. Computer ratings are great for this purpose as they always will rate at least all FBS schools. Thus if you are a very top heavy conference with bad schools near the bottom of your standings, computer ratings will heavily penalize you.
A simple statistical process called "normalization" is then used to put the AP poll and the computer rating averages on the same scale with their 50/50 weights.
Hopefully this sheds a little more light on our methodology. Suggestions are always welcome and debate always encouraged.

how does a conference that's falling apart beat us. i could understand if the ACC or Pac-12 but definitely not the big 12.

Personally I'd put UF at above average.
ETA: forgot about the hogs, as usual. they're decent.

From the comments section on that article:
Jealousy sucks.

Really not sure how SEC is even still called a "college conference". Between all the street thugs and academic rejects, most members (exception Vandy-perenial basement dweller) don't really resemble college athletics at all. Maybe we should just call it a "Social Club" until they actually establish some academic standards for players.
Jealousy sucks.

I agree. Florida impressed me last weekend against the Vols. They are a legit contender to win the SEC title.
Arkansas is talented and tricky. Petrino is an offensive genius so there is nothing average about that team.
The top 4 in the SEC are strong. Those 4 should be in the top 10 in the country. Line up these 4 (LSU, Bama, Ark, Fla) against the top 4 in other conferences and see what happens.
Then you have South Car, UGA, Miss St, and Auburn and they are solid "middle" of the pack type teams that would run wild on the average teams of the other leagues.
