the NCAA announced that its Division I Amateurism Cabinet had proposed new legislation designed to close a loophole that Auburn slipped through en route to the BCS title.

The new proposal attempts to cover that situation going forward. It applies to family members and other third parties that act like an agent and try to get paid.

I hope there is no retro-active punishment then.

Does it cover solicitation or must you receive a benefit???
If a player or someone close to him ask for something from UGa, can he still get a scholly to UF? Would UF be in trouble...

They better be damn tight on the language here.
What would stop me from going up to Alabama and asking for money on behalf of every recruit they sign, then?

Why would anyone ask GA for money but not ask FL for money?

Thats the loophole now.
Cecil asked MSU for money and then Cam went to AU for free.
I still dont see how a school can get in trouble for doing nothing wrong. How can these schools police recruits activities and their families or agents before they even sign with the school or get on campus?
How can UF get in trouble for signing a kid in February if that kids dad asked Tenn for 30K in November and Tenn says "No"?
Unless Tenn tells everyone about the conversation, which would be denied by the kid and family, how would anyone know?

You would have to have a proven connection to him to be acting on his behalf

I would hope so.

There was never a loophole to begin with! IMHO

I dont know if Auburn paid Cam or not. But I highly doubt Cecil didnt ask for a pay day from every school interested in Cam.
As for the third parties, im going to assume the language will show the party must have some type of interaction with the athlete. Otherwise as another poster stated random people would start asking on behalf the recruit.
ETA: Sorry capstone didnt even see your post saying basically the same thing.

Oh...well then...what the heck are we even talking about?
Why are they making a rule to close a loophole that does not exist? Waste of time...don't you think?

NCAA has already made their ruling on Cecil's involvement. The only thing available for punishment was being disassociated from the program. No special access, or interaction with the players.
