SEC chant

Why do we do it? Is it a southern thing?
My PSU buddy and I are arguing about it. He says it's stupid and that you should be more concerned with your team and not a conference.
I say that it's just a way to rub it in. And the fact that non-SECers hate it makes it that much more fun.
What do y'all think?
SEC chant, motherfricker. Do you chant it?

I love playing the SEC although it may cost us a chance to play for the NC in some years. I wouldn't trade the chance to play Bama and Florida every year for a few extra NC game appearances.
I think that's why I support the rest of the league. I want everyone else in the SEC to be good and then I want to beat them.
It's like being the hardest Spartan.

Jealously and envy creates animosity.

Pride mostly, plus people in the south are much different than people anywhere else in the country....When it's mid august and football is but two weeks away, what are the people in the south most excited about? Ask them and they'll tell you...SEC FOOTBALL! It's just the way it is...and yes, I chant it with the rest of them.
The only time that schools in other conferences actually care about what another conference member does is when they play the SEC. Do you think that say, So Cal fans give a rats arse about what Stanford does against Va Tech? shite no....but if Stanford was playing a SEC school, they would be pulling for them like they were related....SEC BABY!

My outlook on it is that during the whole game you chant and cheer for your team. Then at the end of the game you let them know where you came from. And that's the SEC, better fear it bitches

PSU fan is right. End of story, root for your team. Id rather other schools in the conference struggle and help recruiting. Chant is stupid.

I didn't hear the LSU fans doing it last night.

The SEC is badass, and we should all feel honored to play in it. I know Carolina hasn't brought much other than baseball success to the conference since we joined, but I am damn proud to be a part of it. I envy the tradition of teams like Bama, Tennessee, and LSU, and that is what I hope Carolina strives to have just a fraction of at some point. Being in the SEC and being Southern means a hell of a lot more to us than it does to being a northerner and being in the Big 10, etc. More pride down here, and it is a slug fest from recruiting, to the media days, and of course, throughout the season.
So, if I ever get the chance to bust out the SEC chant in a big bowl game, you're damn right I am going to do it.

I pay good money for tickets, I root for my team. What is wrong with conference, and southern, pride.
I chanted my arse off in the GA Dome last year.

The SEC fans need to band together because is a way, the system was pitted against them for a long time in favor of the more media loved teams from the North and the West. And don't think the world is not waiting for the SEC to fall from grace so they can go back to worshipping the Ohio States and Michigans and USCs of this world.

The South has always been a proud region. I took an honors class at 'Bama called Southern Values and Culture, and we covered how proud we are as a region. I think the "SEC" chant and conference pride goes along with how we are loyal to our region and the South as a whole. Also, why I think rivalries in the SEC are more heated than others elsewhere; the same regional pride we have for the whole South, we have for our city, state, college, etc.

What gets me is how this SEC pride thing is getting so much play as if it just started with the advent of the BCS. When I was a kid in the 70s and 80s Vandy and Ole Miss would be on the living room tv even if #1 Nebraska was playing #2 Penn State on another channel. (this didn't happen often though b/c there were on two games on tv each Sat. But still that how it was.

I like it. First of all, the chant comes secondary to our own respective unique school cheers during bowl games. So, it's not like we're putting the conference first. Secondly, as you said, it really seems to get under the skin of the opposing fans, which I find humorous. Thirdly, I like it because we spend 99.9 percent of our time bickering among ourselves and telling one another to go to hell. It's kind of cool that we display some semblance of solidarity on rare occasions.
On a somewhat related note, I could have sworn I could hear the OSU fans mockingly doing the "SEC" chant after they beat Arkansas the other night. Anyone else notice this?

Quite simply, I love it because it chaps the asses of the other conferences. The reason I like this is that we are always hearing static from everyone else that the SEC isn't as dominate as we think we are, from fans on the street to conference commissioners. The SEC chant is just a little reminder in the form of two fingers to the eyes, that yeah, we ARE the best...certainly in this game at least.
