This is a fun website! The College Football Belt
The premise is that the college football championship should always vest in the team that beat the reigning champion - like boxing.
Auburn currently holds the belt by virtue of beating South Carolina in the SEC Championship Game. It's been passed from team to team in the SEC over the past several weeks.
LSU last held the belt in 2007, won it by beating Auburn, but lost it later in the season to Arkansas (the BCS Championship game agaist tOSU was therefore meaningless since neither team held the belt at that time). Arkansas lost the belt to Missouri in the Cotton Bowl.
LSU held the belt briefly in 1983 by virtue of its win over the Washington Huskies, but gave it up the next week to Florida. Tigers also held the belt in 1987 by beating Florida and defended it for several games before eventually losing it to Alabama.
eta: error in op.

It's amazing how they keep track of that all this time.
It's also cool when it coincides with the actual national champion.

USCe had won the belt by beating Alabama earlier in the season.
So why didn't Kentucky take the belt when they beat USCe?
ETA: Sorry, obviously didn't make it down to the post above mine. Point still stands though, anyone care to explain?

Non-title match guys. Don't you know anything about wrastling? It has to be a big time game for it to be on the line or something.

They did. Then Georgia took it from UK, then Florida took it from Georgia, then USC took the belt again, this time from Florida.

The belt has stayed in the SEC for 2 years now. Or it will be 2 years on jan. 8th.

It worked out in the 2000s with Miami, USC, and Florida holding it for large chunks. But if you look at the early 90s, it will make your head spin. It changed hands 40+ times and fell into the hands of teams like Rice, Tulsa, and Wyoming. It also missed Nebraska's 46-2 run from 1993-1996.

You notice that Southern Mississippi under Curley held it briefly.
