Assistants who you can't figure out why they keep getting jobs

Ted Roof is answer #1 to me. He's been dogshit everywhere but always gets a new job. Now apparently he's the new DC at Boston College.
I also don't understand how Kendal Briles keeps getting jobs. Shane Beamer should have been fired for hiring Briles.

Fans see a bad offense and think the OC isn't good; maybe he's just a victim of circumstance.
Not sure how fans think they can accurately evaluate a coach, we see maybe 10% of what they do.

Wasn't Roof solid at Duke? I may be wrong.

Not sure I give enough of a frick about college football anymore to know about spare assistants around the landscape.
But I can definitely bring up some turds from the past..
Shawn Watson
Tim Beck
Greg Robinson - did well in 2004 at Texas but overall super meh
Gary Darnell - A&M finally killed his career off
^ yes I am biased listing them first but still
Marcus Satterfield
Jeff Bowden - nepotism special
Brian VanGorder - been in HS for a while but that stint at Notre Dame -
Alex Grinch - Lincoln Riley defense

Grantham doesn't really have the same track record of constantly getting new power conference DC jobs like Roof does. Grantham was demoted to a position coach for 3 years after getting fired at UF, and then when he sucked even worse as Oklahoma State DC, he was fired after just one year and is now the DC at UAB.

Not sure if you're being sarcastic, but he was 6-45 overall and 3-33 in the ACC as head coach at Duke.
Since then, he's been DC at Minnesota, Auburn, Penn State, Georgia Tech, NC State, Appalachian State, Vanderbilt, Oklahoma, UCF, and now Boston College. He sucks everywhere but always gets a new power conference DC job. He's had some occasional short demotions, like his one year stint as Appalachian State DC and his one year as a Clemson position coach, but those have been his only two years since his firing as Duke head coach where he hasn't been a power conference defensive coordinator.

He didn't even make it the whole season. He was fired four games or so into it.

Van Gorder did stay in college football for way too long, but now he's a high school defensive coordinator (not even a high school head coach), which is about the peak of the abilities that he really has.
It was bad enough how ND hired him after he flopped so badly at Auburn. But then Louisville was dumb enough to hire him after he flopped at ND. Van Gorder allowed over 50 points in 6 of his last 7 games as Louisville DC. Included in that span was allowing 77 points to Clemson. And in the one game in that span where Louisville didn't allow 50 points, they allowed 38 points to a BC offense that had Scott Loeffler as OC and Steve Addazio as head coach.
Speaking of Scott Loeffler and Steve Addazio, I don't know how I forgot to mention them as a "how do they keep getting jobs." Loeffler seriously managed to get a head coaching job at Bowling Green after he bounced around Power 5 programs coordinating some of the worst offenses of all time. And as for Addazio, well, nobody would have predicted that he'd get 3 FBS head coaching jobs (including one at a power conference program) when he was sucking as UF OC. Both Loeffler and Addazio have now stopped being idiotically hired (Loeffler was recently fired as a QB coach, and Addazio was fired as an OL coach a few years ago and is now an announcer because he can't get a coaching job), but it is remarkable how long they hung around.
When Loeffler became a head coach, he was the only guy who was still willing to give Van Gorder a DC job, albeit not at the P5 level. Van Gorder was fired as Bowling Green DC after 2 years and then fell to the high school assistant ranks.

One year when he was DC at State, we had an unusually talented defense. He decided to do a 1A and 1B defense which took some of our best defensive guys off the field for long amounts of time. I blame Mullen for letting him do that.

Too many people let internet narratives cloud their thinking.

The guy who is OC for the team that has back to back SEC Championships?
Posted on 4/21/26 at 8:41 pm to UFFan
He's been DC for the Browns, Cowboys, Georgia, Lousiville, MSU, UF, and OSU. That's a better resume than Roof with Vandy, PSU, Duke, and GT.

No he wasn't. He was named Assistant Head Coach. That's just a silly title to pay someone more money. And I would not call giving up 20 points a game and being outside the top twenty as an excellent defense.

I actually got into a discussion with Noah Thomas’ brother last week and man do they regret that decision to transfer lol.
