Oats top 3 in coaches?

I have seen social media posts from a Bam saying Nate was top 3 in the NCAA among BB coaches. I would put him as 3A and 3B with the Tenn coach as the UF and the ARk coach both have natties. And would be the top 2
I am curious where folks would rank him among all NCAA coaches. My thoughts are top 10 and close to the bottom of the list. One would have to put a coach with a natty over Oats as long as they are still winning at a high degree. People like Petino, Cal, and Izzo.

Having a natty is more random in men’s basketball. It’s not necessarily as much of a discriminator as football.
Hurley is the best in my opinion. After that it is about how much deference to resume you give Izzo, Cal, and other ring holders.

We've won 25+ games and 2+ tournament games 5 of his 7 seasons, including the last 4 in a row. The only coach I'd trade him for is Hurley. That kind of consistency is extremely rare.

He’s not top 3 but definitely top 10. There’s no other coach on the country that we could reasonably get that I would trade for him though.

If you had to start a program today and go forward, you could argue he should be a Top 3 pick
But for one season? Nah he’s not there yet

I would not trade him for another coach, but that’s more of an appreciation of him than a ranking. Realistically there are coaches that would be ranked higher by objective people. Maybe even people who have a better chance at winning a Championship. I’d rather have Oats. He says it would mean more to win a championship here. To me, it would mean more to win it with him than some random person.
Another important thing to consider is any coach who is ranked ahead is at a place that has a history of prioritizing basketball and has won in the past. This would be the equivalent of if a football coach took over Mizzou or South Carolina and suddenly had them in the hunt every year.

Pitino is the best active coach. No question in my mind. He has national titles at 2 different schools. He's also been very successful at other schools too. Hurley is in the next tier as he's done really well the last few years, but his tenure isn't as long and UConn has been good for a long time, even Kevin Ollie won a title there. I'd probably put Sampson on there and Bill Self.
After that you can make an argument for Oats. I think Calipari is really good, but more as a talent acquisition guy than a coach. He should have won several more titles than he did. 1 title with all that talent is pretty silly.

1/3 of all of Alabama's sweet 16 appearances in program history have happened in the last 4 years. 2/3 of our elite 8 appearances and our only Final 4 appearance has happened in that time as well.
Sorry to have to say it like this, if he can take a mid to low-tier program like ours to that level and maintain it he's a top 5 coach in the country.

If we are going to definitively say he's not top 3, can we please start listing your 3 current best coaches?

Hurley is definitely at 1 and it would be hard to argue for anyone other than Sampson at 2 given him posting top 5 KenPom teams for 6 consecutive years. Oats is definitely in the next group of coaches for that 3rd spot and would probably be where I'd lean though there are other coaches that could have arguments.

Yeah, this is where I'm at (even though Hurley is an arse I'd have to where my thickest crimson shades to get behind). I'd have Sampson ahead of him currently but he has to be close to retiring and Oats has a lot of potential considering his age, rapid rise, and I'd argue the best offensive system in college basketball.
