Now we have to pay even more money than we already did last season in order to try and retain the roster that lost 38-3 in their last game. Then shell out millions to get unloyal players from other teams that left their own teams to chase $?

What the frick even is this? I know it’s been said to death. But somehow it gets more idiotic each year.

NIL= DEI, pure and simple.

Until the NFL expands, there are currently 1696 ACTIVE roster spots in the NFL. The NFL has been highly adept at finding lower level players (G6, FCS, Division II) for decades now.

All this is doing is making the NFLs job of identifying talent easier.

1696 ACTIVE roster spots. It’s ridiculous.

It's losing a lot of its luster, no doubt.

Exec 1: “What if… we took the worst aspects of the NFL, enhanced them by making contracts vague and year to year while asking fans to pay more and more while giving them less and less in return?”

Exec 2: “Brilliant! Then when we’ve taken that as far as it can go we’ll invite private equity in to maximize profits while destroying any vestiges of brand loyalty!”

I'd rather Bama sit on money than participate in this nonsense.

I kind of starting thinking sometime last year, that in just a few years, college football as we know it will not exist. What is currently college football will OFFICIALLY become minor league football. College football will become basically a club sport. I can't see a scenario where the sport survives the financial burden that it has become. Or maybe there are 40-50 teams tied to universities but doing their own league. I don't know, but this is not sustainable.

I’m less concerned with whether it’s sustainable and more concerned with whether I want to continue to give a damn.

It’s just a crappier version of the NFL and absent nostalgia and ties to the university there’s basically no way I would follow it.

They quote ratings being up but I’m convinced most of that is just sports betting which is completely out of control. Speaking with the people who own seats around me and other diehard alumni most are considering walking away completely.

Two years ago when Caleb Downs transferred to OSU it was common knowledge that they paid $20 million just to retain the starters they had and not what they paid transfers. Word is that number was north of $40 million this year. These numbers will continue to grow only for the Texas schools, Oregon and probably Michigan for as long as their billionaires wish to pay. At the end of the day they can still only have so many kids on the roster. That's where the rest of college football will be, picking from the leftovers who, if they up their value, will leap up to those schools at the first opportunity. This is college football now. There is no fixing it.

Edit: The one thing that gives me a laugh is thinking about all the dollars spent by those schools with pretty much nothing to show for it.

There’s a lot of irony here.

Fans would rather win with “unloyal” players than lose with “loyal” players. Fans want all this loyalty from players, but they damn sure don’t give it themselves.

I get joy out of it too. Assuming the rules don't change and we're not splitting from ncaa, Bama will just have to approach things differently.

I don't disagree with any of that. I as an alumnus and (previous) die-hard fan, have lost more interest/care each year.

Id rather just Alabama split the revenue evenly amongst roster and tell anyone who doesnt like it to leave

Even going back pre-Saban I watched wayyyy more football then than now. Im a contractor and willingly work most saturdays skipping any non Bama games. I truthfully missed a lot of Bama playing this year. That was unheard of for me just going back a few years. Post covid is where I started losing interest. It picked up a little this year for me...but its now starting to fade again.

Ill of course be back and I like participating on this board. If I didnt have this board...my interest would be even less

Speak for yourself. Id love to hear how Bama fans have been "unloyal" to players. Even players that had rough careers at Bama are treated very well by the fanbase after their playing days are done

Before long they can just plop one of those Tesla robots loaded with the AI knowledge of every football game played for the past 100 years and save that $11 million a year HC salary for the player's pot.

Find a good motivational speaker, ra ra guy for just the halftime speeches and the fundraising circuit...pay him $500k a year and go at it.

I can't get me head wrapped around all the bullshite that is going on now a days. Please tell me that Bama did not pay 50k for a kid to visit cause WHAT. THE. frick.

Another question I have is do these players even go to class anymore? The poor athletic advisors have to be pulling their hair out trying to keep up with all of these transfers. If it even matters anymore.

Almost every class has an online option. That used to be for remote students, but now even students that live on campus basically have the option to never (or rarely) step into a classroom.

It has nothing to do with “treating people well.” Did Caleb Downs say anything negative on his way to OSU?

The simple fact is fans would rather recruit players from other states and win than kids from Alabama and lose. They would rather get a great player out of the portal and put an average fifth year senior on the bench if it means winning another game.

Fans want to win with whoever can do the winning, even if it means mercenaries.

The fans only care about winning, and the players and coaches only care about money and opportunity. No one is loyal and everyone is looking out for their own interests.
