I now believe recruiting HS QBs regardless of talent or rating is almost dead for

teams perennial NC level teams.

The era of 22-25 yo QBs is firmly here. Just get the best available out of the portal.

I don’t think you’re far off.

Why waste time and money with an 18 yr old learning on the job when he finally gets the start when you can get somebody from a smaller school that’s a proven winner and has shown their talent at a college level?

Chambliss had two Div II championships under his belt when Lane picked him up.

There's not enough Chamblisses to go around, Lane struck gold with him.

LSU just tried to play a transfer quarterback 3.5 million dollars and lost.

I've been following D-II football since the '90s when I was an undergrad student at Valdosta State. Chambliss-level talent isn't as rare as one might think.

Unfortunately for FCS and D-II, they are now going to be farm leagues for FBS.

So the question is... what happens to HS QBs if no one chases and develops them?

They get developed at the lower levels like Chambliss.

It has not just changed QB recruiting. The Super Senior, Portal and NIL have left less room for kids out of HS who are not sure shot athletes. College teams in general are older. Players who were not sure shots who developed, grew and matured. Roster spots and $$ are not allocated to players like this in many programs.
Throw in that a lot of HS football players are held back a year, and you get 23-25 year old players on teams now and that maturity, both physical and mental mean something.

We may inadvertantly be training our backup QBs to be starters for rivals.

If we had beaten Ole Miss we would have heavily trained our opponent's starting QB with a trip to the national championship on the line.

Odd college football world we live in now. To put it mildly.

The Super Senior

At least this was the last year of Covid super seniors. But I guess a precedence was set with Pavia winning an extra year right?

Yep. Chambliss is 23 years old. He developed at the lower level. So frick paying QBs 2+ million dollars. Invest that money on keep your best talent out the portal.

Pretty sure you could make that argument for any position and it be just as valid. That said, there are still good athletes that want to play for teams they have loved since their childhood and the $$$ isn't weighted as heavily in their list of priorities.

The problem is those kids - that commit for love of the G early on and stick it out are always at risk of losing their spot to some transfer that may be better but doesn’t give a shite about the Jersey they're wearing

It sucks.

Kirby does seem to have a little Herb Brooks in him - which isn't a bad thing.
