Should we have put the interim tag on Steven Pearl

I get that we've lost to a lot of really good teams but to have 3 thirty point losses is just insane. We know he was promised the job because it's what Bruce wanted but this is BIG TIME college basketball not some high school deal.

3 point shooting is bad, but not having a big guy that can play is what is really hurting us.

Yeah, we went all out to try to land some bigs, but in the end got outbid. Would have happened to BP too.

we have a poorly constructed roster. It isn't Steven's fault. Next year will be a better barometer of what Steven can do.

Yeah.
We got spoiled with 5 years of Cardwell swatting away anything that got close to the rim on a regular basis. Plus, he had some help in all those years.
Now we have nothing down low.
Cannot compete with teams who have big athletic guys on the front line, hence the arse whuppings from Michigan, Arizona, and Purdue.
Our only chance against that type of team is getting hot from 3, and that does not look like it will happen very often this year.

This is not Steven’s roster. This is Bruce’s roster. I don’t think if Bruce were here our record would be any different. Maybe Houston is a win but doubt it.
Maybe Bruce was/is a better in game motivator but I’m not sure. Gotta give Steven into next season before we even start passing judgement.

I thought we'd be more competitive in the bigger games.
We look pretty horrible at times.. but I'm always over judgmental with Auburn sports...
We're probably going to get our butts beat a good bit this year.

Yes. This team isn’t good. They’re small. This might not even be an NCAAT team.

Maybe, maybe not, but this team isn't the one he will be ultimately judged on. And as bad as it has looked at times I think we win 10-11 SEC games and make the tournament with little sweat.

I didn't like how this all went down. Bruce retiring the way he did forced Steven into the position. I get that this is a flawed roster but Steven was part of the team that put it together so he's not without blame. We don't play with anywhere near the same intensity that we have in the past. He's not on the hot seat by any stretch but if the roster doesn't get straightened out in the off season I personally don't think he should be promised a year 3 without clear signs of improvement

Our issues are deeper than lack of size, our defensive awareness is terrible

This year was always going to be a huge step back though. We had the same core for 2-3 years and Covid eligibility worked into a perfect storm for the best team in school history last year. Returned 1 player (best case would have been 2).
Agreed on the defensive intensity but I think it's roster not coaching. BP had a couple of teams that played like this defensively.

Our defense is designed to force shots in the paint. But to have 2-3 capable shot blockers on the team inside. We have no true shot blockers. We will get some blocked shots.
Our outside defenders funnel dribble drives to the shot blockers press down on the baseline. They are supposed to challenge outside 3 pointers.
There isn’t any defensive chemistry on the team. I think we have some guys that can be decent defenders but being in sync with each other is nonexistent.
Right now I’m guessing close to .500 maybe 1 game above and get in the tournament or 1 game below and probably miss the tournament. Definitely need a huge home court advantage and honestly the fans just don’t seem to connect with this team like before. Maybe because the roster is rent a players.

I remember in the Kessler season some crazy stat in the later part of the season that Walker had blocked 25% of all opponents 2 point attempts. That’s insane

Sensing this too.. I think there is a chance SP could have a successful run at AU but if the wheels fall off this team it could start affecting recruiting immediately and the whole thing might be over before it started. I think it's important this team is competitive the rest of the season just for that alone.

Probably part of it is the rent a players aspect, but I think the other part is the things that usually get a crowd hyped up are the things we are bad at. A clutch three point shot, a steal and a slam dunk, a key blocked shot, a big man slamming a dunk home inside, those are the sorts of things that gets a crowd going.
And we really don't do much of any of that. Our defense sucks, we have nobody to block shots, and we can't hit threes. Most of our points come from driving the lane for layups and hoping to get fouls. Which while it can be effective offensively, isn't an exciting play style for the fans in the gym.

The last few yrs we were so physical not only down low but with our guard play. With the exception of KO, we don’t have that presence at all and just get bullied.
That is why I want us to recruit better to have some in-house grown talent.

I agree with this. And I'm not really sure there is any reason they shouldn't be competitive enough to accomplish this.
Being a boring tournament team who wins a game but never threatens for much more is completely fine in this regard, I think.
