Tough learning lesson for the kid no doubt. I kind of hate the celebration rule also. If he did something vulgar then throw the flag, but this seems a little overkill to completely flip the ballgame.

I mean, you can’t throw your helmet. Refs had no choice. Feel bad for the kid though.

That kicker had missed the potential game tying XP just minutes before hitting the game winning FG

He took his helmet off and threw it lmao. This isn’t giving the guns in a general direction. Absolutely should be penalized.

Damn. That’s going to haunt him the rest of his life.

Yeah wasn't sure if that was the actual rule, but if so then the refs had to throw the flag.

Mt Cody and Rocky Block says hi. Sometimes the best thing to do as a ref is just turn your head and ignore the “by the rulebook this should be a penalty” flag.

Taking off a helmet is a no go. Tossing it in the air is verboten.
There was no wiggle room for the refs here.
Hate that for the kid.

A 44 yard field goal to win the game after missing an extra point. Kickers are peculiar creatures.

Punter could have saved the title. Instead he took 2 business days to get rid of the ball.

No, it isn’t. I’ll take a stickler for the rules in all situations over a wishy-washy ref who calls some things or lets feelings dictate what rules he chooses to apply and when.

Slight difference. Game was over with 0:00 on the clock when Cody did it. Pretty sure you can remove your helmet as soon as time expires. Duh!

Coaches and entire teams come on the field while the game isn’t over once the last snap of the game has been taken. This kid has watched that happen his whole life. Once the last snap is taken, refs completely ignore the rule books in every single game in the country at every level of football. This was a complete failure by the refs that threw the penalty. The game was over, and you don’t throw penalties on games that are done. Total hose job by the refs

It was a penalty. Plain and simple. He called it. It was (at that point) an official stoppage of play. The (eventual) winning team had called a timeout but it was given back to them because of the stoppage of play due to the penalty. It was called correctly.

No, I don’t think it was and the ball was still live. The play wasn’t over.
It is a big difference, one a play was still happening and in the other the game was considered over in every game in the country except apparently this one.

So is coming on the field when time hasn’t expired. Refs going to start throwing those selectively as well??
Your argument doesn’t hold up. Either penalties are thrown after the last snap or they aren’t.

quote:It holds up because they were penalized. Plain and simple. The clock had not run out. It was not at 0:00 when the penalty was called. There were two more plays (both stopped by an official timeout by the winning team) prior to the partially blocked punt which set up the game winning field goal.
Your argument doesn’t hold up.

Then that’s even worse. If a TO is called prior to the penalty, then it can’t be refunded just because a dead ball penalty happens after the timeout. Even more of a ref hose job than just the penalty (and yes, the penalty should be called if the other team still had a timeout…since it wasn’t the last snap then).

Sucks for the punter. But this is on the coaches. The other times they had the qb kneel they had him immediately get the ball and kneel. They should have run an actual running play(s) and it would have taken more time off of the clock.
