Gamecocks hiring TCU's Kendal Briles
South Carolina is finalizing a deal to hire TCU's Kendal Briles as the school's new offensive coordinator, sources told ESPN's Pete Thamel on Monday.
Briles, a longtime offensive coordinator, has been at TCU since 2023, following stints at Arkansas, Florida State, Houston, FAU and Baylor.
A finalist in 2015 for the Broyles Award, given to college football's top assistant coach, Briles mentored TCU quarterback Josh Hoover, who set a school record last season with 3,949 yards passing with 27 touchdowns and 11 interceptions as the Horned Frogs ranked eighth nationally in passing offense at 312.9 yards a game. This season, Hoover threw for 3,472 yards and 29 TDs with 13 interceptions as TCU averaged 30.8 points per game (44th nationally) and finished 8-4 with an upcoming Alamo Bowl berth against USC.

Briles would replace Mike Shula, who was fired nine games into the season after the Gamecocks scored 14 or fewer points four times during a 3-6 start. Wide receivers coach/passing game coordinator Mike Furrey called plays for the remainder of the season.
Briles spent the first nine years of his career under his father, Art Briles, at Baylor. The Bears' 2015 and 2016 offenses ranked third and second, respectively, in NCAA history, averaging 616.2 and 618.8 yards per game.
Following Art Briles' ouster in Waco following a review of Baylor's handling of sexual assault allegations made against several football players, Kendal Briles became offensive coordinator at FAU in 2017 under Lane Kiffin.

seems the training wheels got put back on Beamer's bike for the first time since Lembo left -
compared to the list of those who've called plays since HBC stopped - Briles is easily the most qualified outside of maybe Mike Bobo in 2020 - but I doubt Briles would have forced the two bad knee statue named Colin Hill on USC they was Bobo demanded -

Solid pickup. I believe he likes to stretch the field horizontally and vertically so it can be tough to defend his offense.

Huge hire for SC. Arkansas was not the same without him which led to Pittman's downfall.

Potentially a big hire, Briles didn't set the world on fire when he was hired on at TCU. But, in his defense, TCU had been set up for one magical season and when he was hired all the great players were gone.
Unless he has radically changed his schemes the QB will run the ball and throw deep. You are going to have some turnovers but some big plays as well. As long as he has a play maker at QB. When it is working the Veer and Shot offense can put up a ton of yards and points. It will be interesting to see how he does with the talent at USC.

Briles at OC this season and an even semi-serviceable OL would have worked wonders. We would have been a minimum 7-win team.

I really like Briles and think it’s a great hire but that is a very odd move for his career.

He’s probably hoping to be HC by the end of next season.

Have to think some schools just have him permanently crossed off as a candidate due to the Baylor issues, but I also think this is a very good hire for SC.

Wow the SEC has hired another coach that has helped student athletes rape white girls and get away with it on campus!
Hide your daughters!

You made this same post when he worked at Akry, right?

I made this same post when my TCU frogs hired him. I am glad he is gone now. Shame on TCU for ever hiring him.

Fair enough, but that might have been good info to include in your original post...

It is especially sad when the south does this because they take some sort of pride in being the “based” and conservative region of our country. And then they put their daughters at risk to win football games.

Jumping on what appears to be a sinking ship is a bold choice if this is his intention.
Briles is a good hire from a football standpoint though. He maximized KJ Jefferson at Arkansas.

Nice hire. Gotta be good for a couple more wins. Maybe he can fix LS and keep him out of the portal.

I liked watching his offense when he was here. He will occasionally frustrate the hell out of you by just making head scratching decision (like the vast majority of OCs who like to think they are always able to think faster than the opposing DC), but overall a very good OC. Also an exciting and fun offense to watch. I also wouldn't be surprised if he is basically made "backup coach in waiting."
