If you dont see benefit in the opportunity to practice with your team for an extra month and get free shite, you are not the type of player I would want on my team

This sport's death is closer than the experts think

What if the staff is trash and he didn't want to put his body on the line for coaches that weren't worth it

I think the number of kids playing "for coaches" is overestimated. Especially head coaches

I've noticed most HCs dont even walk out to an injured kid unless he is a star these days.

Why would someone who is transferring play in a bowl game? Why would the coach want them to play?

So you don’t have an answer?

A player who is transferring has to wrap up their school and life at the old school. Prepare to move. All in a short time. The new coach is likely using the bowl as prep for the next season. Extra practices etc. The transferring player and the coach would both be wasting their time for no reason at all.

Most transfers are not contentious from the coach or players perspective. It’s just business.

I guess my answer escaped you. Why not quit on the team when your OC is fired mid-season? Or when he privately comes to you and says he will be at ___ school next year? Or the first time your agent says __ school is offering you a raise? Or the first time a depth chart comes out and you are second string? Or the first time you get yelled at in practice?

I wouldn’t take a player who did any of those things..because they are all considerably different from not playing in a bowl game that occurs after the season and semester has ended and you have informed your coach you intend to transfer.

Telling them as early as possible is the right thing for a player to do. Letting the next guy up get a jump on practice and reps is the right thing to do.

No one cares about these bowl games, except the coaches prepping for next year, seniors without a future in football, and players wanting more reps.

Having some guy who you know is leaving involved in all that is a waste of everyone’s time.

It's situational though. Knowing what I know about Brian Kelly now I wouldn't blame a kid with generational wealth on the line for not wanting to play in a crap bowl for him. I don't like it, but I understand

I wouldn't accept a coach that was willing to walk out on his team right before a playoff run.

I agree with OP. You want guys who will take every chance to improve themselves and have a desire to play the game because they love it.

Ideally, yes this should be the case. We fans are proudly irrational. Makes sense since fan is short for fanatic.

But this will never happen. It is too commonly accepted as matter of practice now. You won't find a single rational talking head who would agree with this.

I think it’s why people like walk-on success stories. Nobody respects a mercenary, but they do respect someone who has that competitive spirit and works their butt off to be better.
