I figure he'd had a punt blocked already and would have been punting from his end zone and give Georgia the ball around the 50 at best and a Field Goal sealed it so why not

They were down by 2 scores. Punting there almost guarantees its over.

It was a 2 score game. Georgia had dominated the time of possession and Alabama doesn't really get explosive plays. We are more of a long drive type of team....when it's working. 7+ minute drives are common and like 9 minutes left in the game.
If there was any chance of this team to win, they had to convert. They didn't and that was the basic story of the entire game.
DeBoer was playing to win, rather than playing to lose by less points.

I don't look at things that way. The format is dumb, it devalues strength of schedule. It makes it so playing weak schedules is the best path rather than promoting good match ups.
And it's going to result in making things worse. Alabama shouldn't be in the playoffs this year. Not because they aren't among the 12 best teams, but because 12 teams is way too fricking many.
