Alabama has to win the SEC next weekend to make the playoff.

See a lot of people bringing up last year with SMU not being punished for losing the ACC Championship game to Clemson, but there is a big difference between last year and this year. SMU had 2 losses after losing to Clemson compared to the SEC teams with 3 losses they were compared against. This year, they would hypothetically be comparing a 3 loss Alabama to multiple 2 loss teams.
If BYU wins the Big 12 and Alabama loses to Georgia, you think a 3 loss Alabama gets in over a 2 loss Oklahoma that just beat them on the road? Or a 2 loss Notre Dame on a 10 game win streak? Or even a 10-2 Miami? I can absolutely see Alabama dropping out of the playoff field.

TT would have to throw the game to BYU to lose it.

1. The committee says that they don’t punish CCG losers, and that was the reason why Alabama missed the playoff last year in favor of SMU. That’s also why PSU was seeded higher than OSU despite both having 2 losses and OSU having the head to head win.
2. However, Alabama will still miss the playoff if they lose the CCG and Texas Tech beats BYU.
It wouldn’t be because they’d get penalized for the CCG loss. It would be because Alabama is currently the last team in the playoffs, and BYU would take Alabama’s current spot even with zero penalty being assigned to Alabama for losing the SEC title game.

I don’t know why people have such a mental block to the idea of Alabama missing the playoff if BYU and UGA win next week.
In fact, I don’t really see how Alabama could possibly make the playoffs in that scenario.
Answer this question: who in the current CFB rankings would Alabama pass in that scenario? They’re currently 10th, and BYU, a G5 champion and the ACC champion would end up moving ahead of Alabama.
And, yes, that’s even with the committee not counting the SEC title game loss against Alabama.

I actually agree it’d be tough for them pending the rest of the results. They were the last team in and would have added a win against a bad team and an additional loss. But we’ll see.

If BYU beats Texas Tech and Georgia beats Alabama, who will Alabama pass in the rankings? Name the team.
Unless you can answer that question, that means that Alabama would miss the playoffs in that scenario.

What does it really matter. Have you watched the last half of the season? I’m sure some teams would love to get Alabama in the first round of the playoffs on their home field…lol

Easy, Notre Dame. They have an arse schedule with 1 ranked win

Regardless of whether ND should be ranked ahead of Alabama, the committee already made that decision. And I don't really see how Alabama barely beating a 5-6 Auburn team (and then losing in a rematch to UGA) while ND routs Stanford (which is a bad team but did beat FSU) would change that decision.

'Bama also beat Georgia once already on the road, and also have wins over currently ranked Tennessee and Vanderbilt.

If we are all being honest… it makes the SEC Champ game fun and worth watching.
