I know Sumrall is the hot up and coming coach option, but I could see Fritz as a Cignetti style hire - more experienced and wins everywhere he goes. Also is an offensive minded coach which builds more excitement.
Blinn JC:
Turned 5-24 into 39-5-1 and 2 nattys within 4 years
Central MO:
Winningest coach ever at 97-47. First bowl game appearance in 32 years and first ever D2 playoff berth in program history.
SHSU:
Undefeated regular season and back to back national title game appearances in only 3 years.
Ga Southern:
9-3 and 8-4 in their first 2 seasons as an FBS school. That is James Madison esque for sure
Tulane:
Took longer to rebuild but ended with 12-2 and 11-2 seasons including a NY6 win over USC. Built the program that Sumrall inherited, and it feels like he isn’t getting enough credit for that
Also: he had an offer to become the GA Tech coach but turned it down because he didn’t want to leave his team before the season ended
Houston:
Turned a dumpster fire into 8-3 by his second season. Had them in the thick of the title race until they lost last week.
Would still prefer Dillingham, but I think Fritz is better than anyone else with the possible exception of Sumrall

Too old
And I’m still convinced Dillingham is fools gold

I think you're right on both

He is one year older than Cignetti who is about to go to his second straight playoff and has a legit shot to be the #1 seed
We need a coach for the next 10 years, not the next 20. Also, with the expansion of analysts/off field staff + a GM for recruiting I feel like being a head coach is a lot less physically demanding than it was 15 years ago. Could Sumrall be better? Sure, but he’s a lot less proven - and so is Dillingham

Why? Because he's older?

Fritz would be like Kermit Davis 2.0

lol, so winning football games at Tulane and Houston is comparable to winning basketball at MTSU in the old sunbelt and CUSA? Absolutely not. Winning a NY6 bowl is like making an elite 8 run which Kermit never sniffed.
Fritz has done it everywhere he has coached including a power conference this year.
Edit: also, on what metric other than age is hiring the current Tulane coach better than the previous Tulane coach who was so successful he got a power 4 job?

We’re not hiring Father Time to be our head football coach.

Still haven’t heard a reason why a coach the same age as Cignetti should be a non starter. Hell, IU just gave cignetti an 8 year extension. He’ll be 72 in 2033.
What has Jon Sumrall done that Fritz hasn’t? He’s a defensive coach vs offensive. So it’s fine if you prefer defense. But it’s not like Sumrall is a slam dunk compared to the guy who built the Tulane program Sumrall inherited.
Anyways, probably a moot point but the talk about Sumrall feeling pressed to make a decision soon got me thinking of other acceptable options.

Good for them. They can make their poor decision and live with it.
And the purpose of that contract likely was not to have him as a coach until he’s 72. It was just to keep him from other teams until he runs out of steam, set him aside, and get a new model. It’s highly unlikely he’s still on the sideline in 2033.

So in the present situation what’s wrong with doing that for now. I mean you’re kinda making the case for hiring Fritz. That would give us time over the next 5 or 6 years to look for the ideal long term coach while Fritz maintains and builds on what we have. What am I missing?
