Are huge buyouts for HC agreements even necessary anymore?

Seems to me that they became the norm in the eighties …as a way to assure top recruits that the HC they’re committing to will be around for the duration of their studies. But those recruits are becoming few as portal activity continues to increase.

But these big buyouts …. Are they even necessary anymore given the wild, Wild West of the portal environment?

It can be what you negotiate. The person who gave Freeze a buyout should be fired.

As badly as Auburn has been burned the admin needs to really think about structuring such moving forward… high value cash incentives for performance based outcomes… like every other business contract

Freeze's buyout is fairly standard.

If he didn't deserve a buyout he didn't deserve to be HC

It’s just paying out a contract. It’s SOP. Don’t know why Auburn fans think we’re the only ones who have paid them.

Buyouts (paying rest of the contract) are not new. What’s new are large lengthy contracts.

“Market rate.”

Or so I’m told.

For a coach who is in demand. He was not in demand.

Doesn't matter. It's operating in bad faith.

Dont hire him

I fully agree that he should never have been hired but it isn't operating in bad faith to give someone a contract and salary based on their actual demand and market value.

Guaranteed salaries (versus a heavier emphasis on incentive payouts) and buyouts are what the market dictates. So, it's what you're gonna have to do if you want to hire a proven coach, or any coach that's highly desired. If you do manage to hire an "up and comer" with a lower salary and heavier emphasis on incentives, you'll almost certainly have to skew towards more guaranteed comp once he has success at your school.

As in any market, the seller/employer does not set prices; the market does. Sorry.

Completely understand that that is the way it has been … but the game and player rules have changed over the past 2-3 years.

What I’m asking is whether it makes sense for the industry to continue to do so. Why not shorten the agreements to 2-3 years instead of longer

Let the free market prevail ….

That's an odd way of looking at something that generally only comes into play if the coach doesn't perform to expectation. He deserves to be paid well because his experience and qualifications were what Auburn wanted. I'm not sure why anyone deserves a buyout if they fail miserably.

No dude. Dont play dumb with me.

Yall are the ones with embarrassing takes. Head Coaches get buyouts. Blame Sexton or whoever you want, but dont get snippiy with me. If your HC doesn't have the accomplishments deserving of a buyout dont make him HC

Y'all? :-D whatever Jang.

No one deserves a buyout. Good coaches deserve to be well compensated. This buyout shite has gotten out of control.

If we quit giving a buyout we quit being able to.hire anyone. Coaches only come to this 3 ring circus of a clown show to get rich. That is the reality of our situation

I hope when Auburn hires the next coach he is someone other schools want as well. To get a coach other schools are in competition for Auburn will have to offer a large buyout.

Some times buyouts are just the price of business.

If I was a recruiter and I knew you didnt have a buyout I would call your program not serious and I would call your job unstable.

Name me a P4 HC or athletic department that doesn't offer a buyout to their HC

I'll wait.
