Made the difference. The taunting penalty killed momentum and they got points.
And, if Beau gives his receiver 1 more second to get his head around on that last pass he is still running and we are celebrating a huge win.
2 fricking plays. It's that tight.
I know other plays were critical but if those two go differently we walk out winners.

After the 17-17 tie, Mizzou did what they have always done with Moore as OC. They wasted 2 series. This was a plaque during the Cook years and we see it now. Stopped running the ball, no screens to slow them down, no deep passes.
Zion more than made up for his mistake. Moore is the problem. How can anyone paying attention dispute that?

Zion started the game to hot. He had 20 yards in penalties in Bama’s first drive. His play in the first series gave them 7 points.
He played good the rest of the game, but he would have played good despite the first series.
It was a bad taunting penalty. He wasn’t in on the tackle he ran 10 to 15 yards out of the way and bent down and got in his face.

Yeah, and we committed a face mask that should have given Bama first down on the 1 inch line. Instead they kicked a FG. Plays happen, but after all that, the game is tied 17-17 and we have momentum. Yet we waste 2 series, don't put Olugbode on the field until 3 minutes left in the game and abandon the run.
It would be different if yesterday was an anomaly but its a pattern. We wasted several series vs LSU in the first half. Same in the UGA game in 2023. And even against lesser opponents his offense kept games closer than they should.
I really thought after the KU game that Moore had grown from this tendency. But he seems to be intimidated by DCs that counter him and his playcalling suffers. The Vandy OC has us win by 10.

The fake punt was unnecessary..you're in the ballgame ..that was an irresponsible call.. MIZ

Plus, if you are going to depend on your defense and your 3 time outs, why onside kick? Kick deep, get the stop, run the same offense, and its about a 30 yard fg attempt.

Good post.
I hope we don’t let one loss become 2 or 3.
This team is good enough to go 10-2.

His 2nd penalty was offsides on 3rd and 5 from the 13. It gave them 1st and goal from the 8.
He came out to hot and then trying to make up for the taunting penalty he made another stupid mistake. Zion’s a good player and we need him on the line, but he made it a lot easier for Bama to score 7. It’s probably the worst series I’ve seen by a Mizzou DE/DL/LB in along time maybe ever.

The 2nd penalty was because the Bama guard moved. He's allowed to do a hand signal but he moved his shoulders. Should have been false start.

I thought it was a great gamble. Our D played better with less green behind them AND the more field Bama O had, the more time they could run off. It really seemed like a very low risk call for a fake.

Just to reiterate my previous post, the less space our secondary has behind them the better.

Big 8 officials GAVE games to Colorado and Nebraska (you know which ones).
SEC officials make them look good

The onside kick put the ball on the 45. That's not close enough to adjust the defensive backfield. Once you get to the red zone the field shrinks enough for the safeties to cover better.
Kicking deep puts the safeties at the same risk as the onside kick. And Bama wasn't going to throw the long ball, risk an incomplete and give us a free timeout. They ran the ball to force us to use up our timeouts.

Vandy abandonded the run in the 2nd half against Alabama too. If someone actually sticks to it they'll beat them.
And I don't disagree with your opinions on Kirby Moore, but I guess I'm going to die on the hill that Pribula doesn't see the field well, especially trying to make throws from within the pocket. I hope if Drink and Moore arrive at the same conclusion they tailor their play calling to let him operate in space more often.

you forget a tired DL and allowing bama to grind out more time.

2:00 left in the game and we have 3 timeouts. It was never going to be a long, grinding series. They needed 1 first down and game over. They ran the ball to exhaust our timeouts, the defense held, they punted at about 1:36.
Had we kicked deep, they punt from their 31 instead of our 45. That's 24 yards we lost. Also considering our weak kicker, its inexcusable to not kick deep. The call makes sense if we have the thicker kicker but not Meyer.
Bottom line, we kicked of expecting Bama to be conservative and make us use our timeouts. We also knew the defense had to go 3 and out otherwise Bama could just kneel after a 1st down. So we are all in on a defensive stop. There was no reason for an onside kick. It didn't change the Bama plan and it hurt our field position.

At the time, I was going back and forth on whether to onside. One argument is it gave them a second opportunity, yet low odds, to get ball back. Either way they were going to have to get a 3 and out if they didn’t recover. I also thought about some type of short drop kick. Chance to recover but don’t risk as much field position.

We don’t stop them if we kick it deep. It is that simple.

Who knows all of the rules related to a drop kick?
If it's used in the place of a kick-off would the kick-off rules of it being a live ball recoverable by anyone apply? And conversely, used as a punt could the receiver simply avoid the ball or would it too be live and recoverable by either team? Additionally how would the recovery rules of a drop kick apply as a free kick after a safety? And theoretically could a team choose to on-side kick after taking a safety?

I was in favor of the onside kick. The defense was gassed. And showed little resistance earlier in the 4th quarter. I didn't trust the defense to get another stop.
