We just held the nation's leading rusher to 52 yards.

You aren't going to catch me acting like these last few weeks harken back to 2011 or 2016. However, most of our tight ball game problems the last few weeks have been due to the offense not cashing in yards for touchdowns - too many drives ending with 3 instead of 7 - and missed FGAs because our kicker is basically unusable on kicks greater than 40 yards.
Granted, I think the offense's TOPball approach is explicitly about limiting the amount of time that unit is on the field. So the offense is doing some nice complimentary football for the defense. However, that approach means getting touchdowns at a very high rate is essential to every game not ending up like the last 3 weeks. You know, a play or two in the later stages of the 4th quarter deciding the game one way or the other.

What are your specific complaints at this point in the season?

We've had the opportunity to put all three of our last games away late. We could have won each of these games by two scores but the offense couldn't deliver. We've got to get both sides of the ball clicking at the same time.

Im happy with the adjustments after the opponents 1st and 2nd scoring drives but um was no film watched? Mizzu had what a 4 play td drive? Bama didn't slow them down at all. End of the game, Mizzu drives for a td. If they get the ball back on the onside we ain't stopping them then either.
When Kane called the back to back blitzes I knew it was a frick up. They could see it coming, it wasn't hid well.
Better planning would be nice I suppose.

Theres no Will anderson on this team. No Tim Williams. At this point I’d settle for Ryan Anderson. But given the talent and stage of development he’s making do.
You can see the philosophy. Feel out opening drive a la game 1 Lebron James. Make an adjustment. Bend more often than we break. Create an opportunistic turnover. Hang on for dear life. Maybe less than ideal. But if someone told you in August that exiting week 7, these guys would be 17 ppg with 12 turnovers you would have cashed those chips and sprinted out of the casino.

I’m in agreement. We won this game on pure talent, the same problems keep cropping up, which is coaching.
Poor run fits
Out of position
Outside leverage

I think the d is getting better. I'm sticking with womack unless Pruitt comes back.

Not scoring touchdowns in the red zone is a problem. Having to kick a field goal with first and goal from the nine yard line is one thing, but from first and goal on the one. This is more critical in tight games.

And the thing is with the clock rules and how we're having to play to maximize our chances - TOPball in a pass-first offense that cannot get a tough yard between the tackles with a handoff - we're running on thin margins to keep this up against all the quality opponents we will see this season.
Our two worst opponents we're seeing in SEC play are both going to be road games with teams that have a loose-play QB runner and a good DL. Eastern Illinois may be the only game the rest of the season where we're not basically in The Witching Hour, to borrow NFL Red Zone parlance, late in every game.
If we keep on having to win like that, we are going to pick up another loss. You can't keep on having to win games in the under 5 against quality opponents. We're going to need to maximize our possessions a bit better and have them beaten in the first 55 a bit more often.

DJ Durkin is a better D coord than Wommack.
However, Kane has the defense playing more consistent than last year and is heading in the right direction

i guess the thing that irritates me the most is continually having the same players making the same mistakes over n over. also, it's like this defense goes braindead sometimes. i mean did anyone not know mizzou was going to score that last td, i had zero doubts they would score. i told my brother prior to them scoring that the game hinged on the onsides kick.

I knew the game was going to be an adventure as soon as Mizzou knocked out Miller. He's really the linchpin that holds this offense together. He's the only effective tailback in the rotation. We may not be able to consistently get 3rd and shorts with tailback handoff but he can at least get us effective yards on first down to put us in "anything goes" 2nd down situations for the OC.
Wommack's unit handled the 4 minute defense (two score lead trying to protect against quick scoring) terribly. You want to prevent the chunk yardage plays and keep the offense having to use multiple downs to get first downs. They didn't execute well enough. However some of the problem for our 4 minute defense is we do not have a good 4-man pressure package. So Wommack is in a conundrum: pressure risks massive busts if it doesn't get home, dropping 7 or 8 risks giving the QB enough time to scan and find soft spots.
Ultimately, we should not had to come down to the defense getting a gimme INT to seal the game because the offense cannot consistently run for effective yardage when everyone in the stadium knows it is coming. We should have ended that game without them ever touching the ball again after the onside kick was recovered.
Our defense is limited by personnel - availability at some positions, scheme fit at others - but our offense possesses the ability to be superior not just excellent. So I'm going to focus my energy on what the offense can do to help us win games. We're getting about as much as we're going to get out of the defense. Sucks but there is no juice to squeeze on that side of the ball.

This is where I'm at.
It's really hard to get a feel on where this scheme is because we suck so bad at fundamentals. If we could get players on the ground at the point of contact Bama would be leading the nation in defense.
It's very frustrating watching defenses like OU, TX, and AU make one on one tackles at the point of contact and yet Bama has two and three players either whiffing in the backfield or getting dragged 3 yards down field.
Is the defense good? Yes, it's been pretty solid but it could be great if we'd just learn how to fricking tackle.

Agree with this. We are not a fundamentally sound football team on defense. The sloppy tackling, terrible pursuit angles and losing contain/not setting the edge drives me over and over drives me crazy. I blame it on a poor defensive staff. Frankly, I'd like to see all of them fired at the end of the season.
And no to Durkin. Dude has a bad reputation. No thanks.

You are trolling right? With what Bama has done with a lot of young players is short of amazing. I cant keep up without a roster in my hand.
