Interesting comment made by Eli, he almost committed to horn in 1998. Some remember if that would have been Mack Brown he was considering joining or the coach prior that got fired?

Tbh, I think he said it just to pump horn, unless there were several schools fighting over his commitment. How did his recruiting play out?

Thread hijack: I heard a rumor years ago that Major Applewhite originally wanted to go to A&M. Does anyone know if there's any truth to that?

The way I remember it was Texas was a front-runner until Cutcliffe came to Oxford. Tommy Tuberville was more interested in Jason Campbell being the QB of the future.

Then he witnessed the bi-male cheerleaders do the "hump it" cheer and he left Draggieville immediately.

Does Cutcliffe get the Ole miss head coaching gig without Eli being a key recruit and them watching Peyton at Tennessee as a legacy? I dont think he was underqualified and honestly did as good of a job there as anyone has until probably Lane but do you think he would have landed the gig without the almost guarantee it solidified Eli?

We were in the Final 2 and it was Mack Brown. I thought we had a really good shot at the time and was pissed when we didn't land him.

I’m not sure how much bearing that had. He was already an admin favorite and was a final 3 candidate in 1995 along with Tuberville and Tommy Bowden.

From the timing of the coaches, it was either Mackovic or Brown going after Eli. Dang, Ole Miss changed coaches that year too?

If I recall correctly, R.C. Slocum replaced Steve Marshall at OC with Steve Kragthorpe and A&M pulled Applewhite's offer.

Genius move.

I just remember that his parents were huge Bama fans and named him after Major Ogilvie and that they lived in BR.

Isn’t apple blacklisted for his relationship with some student? Crazy to think that got him blacklisted when coaches in our conference have done worse.

Blacklisted from Texas.

His fail at UH blacklisted him everywhere else.

I think it was a Big 12 black list like Leach and Briles. I’m surprised TCU was able to hire Kendall.

No, Bobby did not cheat on his 9 month pregnant wife. And Bobby didn’t pick out a total porker to cheat with. Applewhite was a total POS for doing what he did.

The whole thing was peacefully swept under the rug for about four years until a long term woman’s (lesbo, go figure) track coach got terminated for banging a student on her team and the coach subsequently sued the school.
