What’s SP+

An analytical system developed by Bill Connelly, a well-respected staff writer for ESPN.
quote:

What is SP+? In a single sentence, it's a tempo- and opponent-adjusted measure of college football efficiency that I originally created at Football Outsiders in 2008. SP+ is intended to be predictive and forward-facing. It is not a résumé ranking, so it does not automatically give credit for big wins or particularly brave scheduling -- no good predictive system does.

It is simply a measure of the most sustainable and predictable aspects of football. If you're lucky or unimpressive in a win, your rating will probably fall. If you're strong and unlucky in a loss, it will probably rise.

Playing devil's advocate, SP+ is critiqued for potentially undervaluing "big wins" when the opponent win expectancy is low, and having a perceived bias towards the SEC.

A team who lost at home and then needed OT to beat Miss State is the top ranked SEC team?

Seems legit.

Alabama probably fell because FSU lost to UVA.
eta: I just noticed FSU moved up 9 spots. Something is wrong with this rating system.

Ole Miss probably fell because LSU's narrow win over Clemson looks worse every game.

I just texted Lane to let him know he needs to stop beating teams or we're gonna fall out of the top 12.

SP+ is as useless as any other advanced analytic.

What’s SP+

It is a data set driven ranking system. It attempts to qualify based on quality of opponent and discarding stats from when games become uncompetitive.

If you ever see some new weird poll being posted … you can usually guarantee it was posted by a Mizery fan and that poll will always have Mizery higher than normal .

when you play teams like lsu, you gotta beat them at least by more than one score or matrices like sp+ will ding you for it

Must be something that makes a program that hasn’t won a co-conference championship in 56 years feel important
