Kansas basketball would be a great addition to the SEC, and its football isn't bad either.

When you say UK everyone knows you are referring to the University of Kentucky, not the University of Kansas.
So based on that I say UK is swinging the biggest dick between the two.

Kansas is about as Great Plains and Midwest as you can get. The SEC don’t want them, and they sure as hell don’t want to be in the SEC. The Big Ten would be a much better fit if that ever happened

Now that everyone can pay players - kU will be a shell of what they have been.
They used to have senior night festivities, not the ones on the court, but banquets where the players were openly given gifts.
They had both active and layaway payment options.
They will still be decent. But won’t be like it was out there in Lowrents.

This is correct. UK is Kentucky. kU is kansas (note the k in kansas should never be capitalized when referring to kU).
All of the old Big 8 conference schools abbreviated with the State initial followed by the U: MU, OU, CU, NU, kU. The other three were schools with "State" in the name, and they abbreviate as you would expect: ISU, KSU, OSU.
I don't know the backstory, but It is too consistent for that not to have been intentional.

No one cares about UCLA's 10 yr run of relevance where Sam Gilbert was buying players and funneling them to Wooden. UCLA wasn't relevant before then and haven't been, with a few random blips, since.
Kentucky has been nationally relevant every single decade. We are #1 all time in virtually every statistic. There is no world in which any rational person thinks UCLA is a better basketball program than Kentucky. None.
