When the SEC eventually has 20 teams, how should the conference be structured?

At that point I feel that you have to do 4 pods of five teams each. UGA’s pod would be something like UGA, Florida, FSU, South Carolina, Clemson (depending on who joins the SEC). Then You would need one permanent non-pod team so we could play Auburn. Then four rotating? Or at that point, would you only play SEC games with maybe one Big Ten team on the schedule because those two conference will eventually form an NFC/AFC thing?

Then I guess you would have the winners of the pods make the SEC playoffs and also include two wild cards. Seed 3 plays 6 and 4 plays 5. 1 and 2 get byes.

Wild card games played on the campus of the higher seed. Winners of the wild card games play the teams with a bye in Nashville and New Orleans (Texas gets nothing). The number 1 seed gets to determine if they want Nashville or New Orleans.

Winners of the final four play in the SEC championship game in Atlanta (as is tradition). Winner of the SEC championship game plays the winner of the Big Ten in the College Football Super Bowl.

The eventual fans who cry about it should be locked away in shipping containers like on Dexter and fed moldy bread. That's the first thing we should do.

I like your ideas. I might allow on-campus playoff games until the championship, which should be in Atlanta.

I feel like there would also be a pod of Bama, Auburn, State, Ole Miss, and LSU.

Clemson and A&M should be permanent nonpod rivals. The game will be named the “Cult Classic.”

Would the 3 permanent rivals be in the same pod?

Perfect — you want to push the SEC to **20 teams**, then organize them into **4 pods of 5** with balance based on:

1. **Historic rivalries** (must protect them).
2. **TV value** (ESPN portfolio of “must-watch” annuals).
3. **Competitive balance** (avoid loading one pod with all the heavyweights).

Let’s do this step by step.

---

## 1. Expansion Candidates (Best Fits for SEC)

Looking at geography, rivalries, and ESPN TV value, the most likely additions are:

* **Clemson** – Fits SEC footprint, natural rival with South Carolina, powerhouse brand.
* **Florida State** – Monster brand, natural rival with Florida.
* **Miami** – South Florida market, rivals FSU/UF.
* **North Carolina** – Expands SEC footprint into a huge market + basketball brand.

Other “dark horse” options (if 3 ACC teams can’t all jump): NC State, Virginia Tech.
But **Clemson + FSU + Miami + UNC** give you the best combo of tradition + ratings.

---

## 2. Pod Structure Logic

* **Each pod = 5 teams**.
* Every team has its 3 permanent rivals locked inside the pod.
* Cross-pod scheduling rotates (like the 3–6–6 model scaled to 20).
* Pods should each have **2 top-tier brands + 3 mid/lower teams** for balance.

---

## 3. Proposed SEC20 Pods

### ?? Pod A – *Deep South Classic*

* **Alabama**
* **Auburn**
* **LSU**
* **Ole Miss**
* **Mississippi State**

*The true SEC “meat grinder.” Protects Iron Bowl, LSU–Bama, Egg Bowl, Auburn–UGA crossover remains intact.*

---

### ?? Pod B – *Texas & Plains*

* **Texas**
* **Oklahoma**
* **Texas A\&M**
* **Arkansas**
* **Missouri**

*All the old Big 12/Southwest Conference powers stay clustered. Red River, Texas–A\&M, Arkansas–Texas all preserved.*

---

### ?? Pod C – *Sunshine & Carolina*

* **Florida**
* **Florida State**
* **Miami**
* **South Carolina**
* **Clemson**

*An ESPN dream pod. Locks UF–FSU, Clemson–SC, UF–Miami, Clemson–FSU. Ratings gold.*

---

### ?? Pod D – *East Coast & Bluegrass*

* **Georgia**
* **Tennessee**
* **North Carolina**
* **Kentucky**
* **Vanderbilt**

*Georgia–Florida stays as annual cross-pod. Tennessee–Bama preserved cross-pod. Adds UNC into a natural fit with UK/UT (basketball/football blend). Vandy balances it out.*

---

## 4. Balance Check

* **Pod A**: 3 elites (Bama, LSU, Auburn) + 2 mids (Ole Miss, MSU). Brutal, but balanced by softer games cross-pod.
* **Pod B**: 3 elites (Texas, OU, A\&M) + 2 mids (Arkansas, Mizzou). Clean SWC pod.
* **Pod C**: 2 elites (UF, FSU) + 1 strong (Clemson) + 2 mids (Miami, SC). Super TV-friendly.
* **Pod D**: 2 elites (UGA, UT) + 1 strong (UNC) + 2 mids (UK, Vandy). Good balance.

---

## 5. ESPN Portfolio Every Year

* Iron Bowl, Bama–LSU, Red River, UF–FSU, Clemson–SC, UF–Georgia, Texas–A\&M, Auburn–UGA, Clemson–FSU.
* Huge TV games guaranteed every week, spread across pods.

---

? That gives you a **clean SEC-20 with 4 pods of 5**:

* Pod A = *Old SEC West core*
* Pod B = *Southwest/Big 12*
* Pod C = *Florida & Carolinas*
* Pod D = *East + Bluegrass*

You would play every team in your pod plus one nonpod permanent opponent. So you would play the same 5 teams every year. Then I guess you do away with non con games and have 7 rotating SEC teams. Or maybe 6 rotating SEC teams and one regular season big ten team to add some flavor. All the SEC vs Big games could be on the same weekend. Sort of an SEC vs. Big challenge.

I would love 11 league games and 1 vs an SEC team. It would make for must-watch football every week. This is how it plays out.

Let’s do this step by step.

Right idea with a slight variation.

SEC West - Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Ole Miss, Miss State

SWC/Big 12 - Texas, Oklahoma, A&M, Arkansas, Mizzou

SEC East - Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, Vanderbilt, Kentucky

ACC Coastal - Miami, Clemson, FSU, So Carolina, No Carolina

Schedule
4 Games - Play your Pod
5 Games - Match with another Pod
1 Game vs Perm 1 or Perm 2 depending on the matched pod

Alabama Perm Example
Perm 1 = Tennessee

Perm 2 = Oklahoma (only played when SEC West matches with SEC East, therefore Alabama and Tennessee are already on the schedule)

Result: This setup essentially is a 5/5 system where each team has 5 Permanent opponents and 5 rotating opponents.. You would play all teams at least 2x every 6 years.

All critical rivalries would be kept.
Alabama vs Auburn
Alabama vs LSU
Alabama vs Ole Miss
Alabama vs Miss State
Alabama vs Tennessee

Auburn vs Alabama
Auburn vs Georgia
Auburn vs LSU
Auburn vs Ole Miss
Auburn vs Miss State

Tennessee vs Vanderbilt
Tennessee vs Florida
Tennessee vs Georgia
Tennessee vs Kentucky
Tennessee vs Alabama

etc etc.

The only game that might be questioned is Florida vs Miami, but they've only played 2x in the last 10 years.. and this schedule has them playing 2x every 6 years..

Miami is NEVER coming to the SEC. I think Kansas has a better chance than them. Miami does not make the league any more money. I'm even iffy on FSU Clemson even joining. The targets are UNC and Virginia. You only take FSU Clemson, if you feel the BIG10 is coming for them, I actually think they could end up in BIG12

Which would you rather watch?

Virginia vs ________ literally can't think of 1 good matchup

or

Miami vs Alabama? Texas? Georgia? Tennessee? Florida? Florida State? Clemson? LSU? Auburn? All of those games would get good ratings..

This isn't 2012 when subscribers mattered.. it's all about eyeballs now..

That being said, I think Miami and Notre Dame are likely going to the B1G together. I don't know the best options at that point.. IMO FSU & Clemson are slam dunks because they create a shite ton of good matchups with good ratings.. North Carolina is a slam dunk because of basketball, and perhaps that is where Virginia comes in as well.. but I'd rather have Miami.

Baseball + FSU, Clemson, UNC and Miami? Is that good?

Football - Ridiculous

Basketball - Kentucky, UNC, Florida, a couple of stepchildren and 15 wannabe's

I wouldn't mind Duke at that point.. adding those games in basketball would be good draws..

I think the B1G would like something like this:

USC
NEBRASKA
WASHINGTON
OREGON
IOWA
UCLA

MICHIGAN
MICHIGAN STATE
MINNESOTA
WISCONSIN
NORTHWESTERN
ILLINOIS

OHIO STATE
PENN STATE
MARYLAND
PURDUE
RUTGERS
INDIANA

NOTRE DAME
MIAMI
GEORGIA TECH
UVA
UNC
DUKE

5 football blue bloods + Miami, Penn State, Iowa, Oregon & Washington
4 basketball blue bloods + Purdue, Maryland, Illinois, UVA
+ all AAU (except Nebraska who got kicked out)

It's a solid league either way.. different, but solid.

Yeah I get that matchups matter now but I feel like the SEC also wants a presence in Virginia for the long term viability of the conference. Virginia is the 12th most populated state and will get bigger over the next twenty years.
