Just came across this on Twitter - After seeing Texas fans lead the charge against Auburn’s national championship claims and even giving A&M shite for trying to claim additional championships for 5 seconds after joining the SEC (and then rightfully taking them down), I thought surely Texas’s claims must be peerless.

Come to find out, Texas to this day claims 1970 as a national championship. A year when they lost their bowl game and finished #3, while Nebraska, the actual national champion, finished unbeaten and AP #1.

Another liberal, gaslighting lie from the fake cowboys.

They finished #1 in the Coaches Poll

It’s a Coaches Poll national title

First time I've ever seen an Aggie boastfully post a 52-14 loss to Texas.

Alabama did the same thing a few years later.

Oklahoma did it when they lost to Kentucky before that. Though neither the AP or Coach poll voted after the bowls at that time.

That was the coaches poll. You might find this surprising but we don't actually control that. Complain to the coaches.

I don't claim it and never have. No one that loses a bowl game should be #1 but, then again, I didn't vote in the poll.

I remember the days before message boards and social media when I wasn't exposed to the opinions of the poor and retarded.  I hate that you have a voice.

Oklahoma was the consensus national champ in 1950. The bowl didn’t factor in

Sagarin gave Kentucky 1950 but I believe that was retrospective

All pre-BCS titles should be vacated

It's a joke at this point

Bowl games were considered more like exhibition games back then. A reward for a good season. I think the AP only started voting after bowl games in 1968 and the UPI/Coaches in 1975.

There are plenty of AP and UPI/Coaches poll #1s who lost their bowl game. Every single one was a national champion based on the system at the time.

1960 Minnesota
1964 Alabama (lost to Texas but still AP #1)
1965 Michigan State (UP)
1970 Texas
1973 Alabama (UPI champ but lost to Notre Dame in Sugar Bowl)

Non playoff bowl games now are now turning back into exhibition games.

Nobody deserves a National Title unless earned on the field. Otherwise you are just the most popular option

If the bowl game wasn't a factor, Texas was the more dominant team.

I am just imagining aggie (OP) sifting through all their back history for another year that they can auburn a championship. Not finding one but becoming happy to find this 1970 title Tx claims. Good lord.

if it's AP or UPI/Coach's poll, it's legit imo. In the days of very little television, the national sportwriters were more apt to have at least some knowledge of the teams nationwide than the fans. The coaches probably were less knowledgable about the teams nationwide, but most were more knowledgable about teams in their own conference than anybody else. Not sure which of the two chose the national title winner before the bowls for a spell in the 60s or 70s. I think the coach's poll.

Then, of course, the BCS later. So AP, Coach's poll, and BSC. Those are the legitmate national titles. And yes, I realize some of Alabama's titles were prior to the AP poll in 1936. Starting at 1936 would be reasonable imo. This website, though, is as reasonable and unbiased as a fan could expect for a look at all of the title teams....

Not sure A&M deserves their lone title either. They haven't been able to follow up on it

All AP/Coaches titles are legit and are claimed in literally every instance. Weird melt.

Maryland lost a bowl in 1953 but won the national title. Bowls didn't matter then. Because not everyone participated in them. And some conferences like the Big 10 only sent 1 team to the Rose Bowl and no others. And it wasn't always their champ. Some years the runner up went to the Rose Bowl because no team could go consecutively.

What this means is that bowls were viewed as an exhibition and their results didn't matter until 1968. With the exception of 1965. They didn't matter in the coaches poll until 1974.

How does it feel to be a pathetic on loser who supports the most embarrassing athletic department in the nation?

Are you 12? Nattys were crowned before bowl games back then so it didn't matter what they did in their bowl game.

If you already won a natty are you preparing or playing with near the same intensity required to win as if you hadn't? No one would its human nature which is why this happened back then.
