Got it—here’s a tentative bottom-10 list of SEC quarterbacks who (a) were primary starters without being benched for more than one game and (b) are judged only on their college play (no NFL bleed-through). I leaned on low efficiency (cmp%), weak TD/INT, and sustained starter status.
10 ? 1 (worst)
Spencer Pennington, Alabama (2004) – Took over after Croyle’s injury and kept the job the rest of the year; finished 96/182 (52.7%) for 1,134 yards, 5 TD, 9 INT. Starter for 7 games.
Riley Neal, Vanderbilt (2019) – 10 starts, 57.8%, 1,585 yards, 9 TD, 5 INT as the offense sputtered to 3–9.
Ethan Flatt, Ole Miss (2004–05) – 2004: 9 starts, 55.9%, 1,530 yards, 6 TD, 10 INT; remained the guy for most of that season despite the struggles.
Omarr Conner, Mississippi State (2005) – Won QB1 in camp and started every game he played at QB (9) before injury; 51.9%, 1,224 yards, 6 TD, 7 INT.
Tyson Lee, Mississippi State (2009) – Kept the job all year (12 games), but posted 58.8%, 1,444 yards, 4 TD, 14 INT (INT rate 6.3%).
Larry Smith, Vanderbilt (2009–10) – Entrenched starter until a late-’09 injury (not a benching), then again in 2010; 2009: 46.7%, 4 TD, 7 INT; 2010: 47.4%, 6 TD, 5 INT.
Treon Harris, Florida (2015) – Took over after Grier’s suspension and stayed QB1 down the stretch; 1,676 yards, 9 TD, 6 INT, with a rough finish (~43% over the last 3 games).
Anthony Jennings, LSU (2014) – 12 starts (missed only Auburn) while LSU’s passing game ranked near the bottom; 111/227 (˜48.9%), 1,611 yards, 11 TD, 7 INT.
Brent Schaeffer, Ole Miss (2006) – Started all 12; 47.1%, 1,442 yards, 9 TD, 10 INT, passer rating 100.75 (team: 4–8).
Perry Orth, South Carolina (2015) – Took over early and stayed the primary starter (1–7 as starter); 54.8%, 1,929 yards, 12 TD, 9 INT on a 3–9 team that finished 0–6 vs. Power-5 down the stretch. The volume + results while holding the job put him at the very bottom here.
How I decided
Eligibility filter: I only included QBs who held the primary starter role without being benched for more than a game (injury exceptions noted). For example, Schaeffer (2006) started all 12; Jennings (2014) missed just Auburn yet remained QB1; Harris (2015) finished as the starter after taking over; McCrary (Vandy ’15) was not included because he lost the job for the final five games.
Performance metrics: low completion %, poor TD/INT, and weak team passing production while still being kept as the starter (e.g., Tyson Lee’s 4 TD/14 INT; Schaeffer’s 47.1%; Larry Smith sub-48% for two seasons).
College only: I ignored NFL careers (good or bad) and didn’t ding anyone for pro outcomes.
If you want, I can tighten this with a simple scoring formula (e.g., z-scores for cmp%, AY/A, INT%) across all qualifying seasons to turn this from “tentative” to “algorithmic.”

I may redo the list and focus on snap count to determine starters. Perhaps something like "averaged more than 1200 snaps per season"

Yes. The Harris experiment was brutal.

Come on man, Jennings was 8-5 with a 500 conference record. Surely there have been many worse than that?

LSU's Jamie Howard says "Hi" from 1994 Auburn game with Three Pick 6's and FIVE TOTAL interceptions in the FOURTH QUARTER alone! He wants the nickname.

Perry Orth is far better than Collin Hill and that is a hill I will die on.

You think a QB that's currently on an NFL roster is one of the 10th worst SEC QBs in history? Dude, QB was not your problem last year, but it may be this year.

Were the offensive line units stinking up the place in regard to these numbers? Were the OLs performing well?
Were running backs blocking when they were supposed to be reading hot routes? Were the running backs reading hot routes when they were supposed to be blocking?
Were WRs and TEs running bad routes, dropping balls?

Omar Connor and Tyson Lee made it in over Mike Henig?? Who threw six picks in Croom’s televised “Winston Churchill say” ESPN game?
Stupid list. Wipe that server and start over.

NCAA sanctions were so severe that Alabama’s second string quarterback literally could not throw a forward pass beyond 10 yards.

Henig deserves mention, but all 3 of those guys were bad. Omarr had the most potential, I hate that he (and Norwood) weren’t around anymore by the time Mullen was hired.
Tyson Lee…. Great guy….. not an SEC QB. I had forgotten how bad State was at passing in Mullen Year 1. They ran all over some teams with Dixon (namely Ole Miss and Kentucky), but if you could stop the run, that team was no threat to beat you through the air.
Henig was bad but that LSU game made his legacy so much worse. He actually didn’t even play as much as some remember. Broke his collarbone twice in 06 and most of that season was QB’d by Omarr, then in ‘07 broke his hand against Auburn and got replaced by Wesley Carroll the rest of the year.

Orth threw twice as many TD and 3 less INT than Hill - Perry passed for 500 more yards than Hill did in his lone season -
also - for passing comparison -
Perry Orth 12 TD 9 INT (2015)
DJ Lagway 12 TD 9 INT (2024)

No Jarrett Guarantano? This list is invalid. Worst football player in history

Had one redeeming moment: coming from behind in the Arky game to win it. He was a deer in headlights and our O line was complete garbage.
