Herschel Walker – goes without saying

David Pollack – He was the best player and the heart and soul of the team that finally broke our SEC title drought. Growing up in the 90s and having to watch another SEC East team run out of the tunnel in the SEC Championship Game was the worst, and the 2022 SECCG victory was euphoria for any Georgia fan who wasn't old enough to remember Herschel, which was me. Pollack also was one of the best players in SEC history. Pollack had the quickest first step and the best bend of any pass rusher I've ever seen. All of the announcers who used to write Pollack off as just someone with a "high motor" were full of shite. When the conference came out with its all-75 year team, David Pollack was one of the defensive ends and Reggie White was the other.

Charley Trippi – I don't know a whole lot about him, but it seems like Mt. Rushmore should have at least one dead white guy.

Stetson Bennett – 4,100 passing yards and 37 total TDs in his only season as a full-time starter and was the quarterback of two national championship teams, which is the same number as all of our other national champion QBs combined.

This is just too difficult and there is no obective correct answer. the only irrefutable, undeniable, not debatable inclusion would be herschel.

I think you could EASILY make a kneejerk answer of pollack, trippi, and sinkwich and call it a day and honestly you'd have a damn good argument. But then you have people like stetson or bowers or champ or roquan or thomas davis or one of our long line of all american K/Ps and it's just too tough.

I'd feel a lot better playing the game if it was a top 8 or 10 instead of only 4. Just too damn many deserving guys to stop at 4.

With 2 championships and his backstory I think Stet is a solid #2 behind Herschel.

For the other 2 though it’s tough.

If we can include coaches and auxillary people, I'd go...

••• Herschel

••• Kirby

••• Munson

••• Stetson Bennett

Off the top of me head:
Stetson Bennett
Kirby
David Pollack
Champ Bailey
Herschel
Vince Dooley
Larry Munson
Bill Stanfill
Jake Scott
Fran Tatkenton
Charlie Trippi
Frank Sinkwhich

Trippi and Herschel are the only 2 for sure. Throw a dart for the other 2.

I think they needed to have played for UGA. As a coach, Kirby makes that cut for sure (thoughts?). Dooley is a legend for sure but he didn't play for GA and the field is named after him already.

So:

Herschel
Bennett
Smart
Bowers?

OR since Bowers is also crushing it in the NFL as well and is also a 2x natty winner:

Herschel
Smart
Bowers
Bennett?

Brock Bowers can’t not be on this list. He’s the 2nd greatest player ever just slightly behind Herschel.

Walker and Bennett in that order. Reasoning: Both led us to NCs. Bennett led us to 2.
Then you could make an argument for about 20, all with sound justification.

I can see the point, but I would put Walker first probably just due to my age. IMHO it seems to me, again due to my age, that Walker had a more profound impact on the statue of UGA than Stetson did in the fact Walker's contribution seemed to propel UGA into upper echelon of CFB whereas prior to him, UGA was just another of the hundred plus schools competing every year. Those 3 years Walker played made UGA a household name which it was not before. It's not a hill I would die on, but it's just I'm old enough recency bias doesn't come into play. I will readily admit I enjoyed Stetson's tenure more than Walkers: probably because I'm old enough to realize just how much it meant whereas when Walker was playing I was just in High School and didn't realize just how special it was for UGA to play in a NC. 40 years of the Goff, Donnan, and Richt Eras brought it into pristine focus.

There might never be another mythical figure like Herschel Walker again in SEC history, let alone Georgia history. Hesrchel was in the People Magazine 50 Most Interesting People issue or whatever it was called back in the day. When I was a kid, every third or fourth dog was named Herschel.

Stetson must be top dawg. Bowers can't be excluded. Herschel can't be excluded. Pollack can't be excluded. Dooley must be excluded.
