Interesting stat I just noticed… after the Vandy game, Jam averaged less than 4 ypc.

The running game has to be better for us to succeed offensively. Our rushing stats were inflated by Milroe, but our pure run blocking was abysmal when we ran traditionally.
Makes you wonder if the defense knew when we were handing it off… did Milroe have a tell ? Is that rumor true?

I mean, I’m not trying to promote a conspiracy theory… I’m just baffled how we weren’t able to get more than 4 ypc from a starting RB for the majority of the season.

Maybe. But to me the bigger problem is the o-line. The players Deboer inherited were recruited for a very different running game than what he likes to run in his offense. He wants them to do a lot more pulling for off-tackle, sweeps, and counters than the traditional zone blocking they were used to. Those guys were square pegs in round holes.
And that's why I'm skeptical of all these preseason power rankings saying we have one of the top o-lines. They're still mostly guys recruited to a run game very different from Deboers. Hopefully they've had time to adjust by now to his blocking scheme. I just worry they're not built physically for that kind of scheme.

It's almost like a key part of the zone read is, you know.. being able to READ the defense and hand it off when you're supposed to and keep it when you're supposed to. How often did we see Milroe keep it and run into a brick wall, and then on replay, it's clear the RB would have had an open lane or at least a chance to make a play? A lot.
Looking forward to a more traditional offense this season. Jalen's big runs were fun to watch, but I'll take a boring and accurate short passing game that moves the chains any day.

I certainly don't know all there is to know about football, but just judging from the reels from the Michigan game, if their defence knew when we were going to run the ball, then we got some pretty good yardage under the most adverse of circumstances.

We faced a pretty good run of defenses from South Carolina onwards. Probably worsened our underlying problems

And they weren't very good the year before in blocking in the system in which they were supposed to be good. I think we've missed and underdeveloped more offensive linemen than any other position in the last five or so years.

Our oline has been average to bad since 2021.

Yup. Alabama's offensive line has had a few good players on it since the start of the 2021 season but, on the balance, it has been a mediocre to poor unit since the start of 2021.
2021-2024 plus 2007 are probably the bottom 5 units since Saban arrived in Tuscaloosa. In 2021 and 2022, they were saved from being an outright bad pass pro unit simply due to Young's ability to operate in a shaky pocket. Neither were good run blocking units. BRob was basically driving through contact at or behind the LOS more often than not in 2021. Once we lost that physical beast, run game has never been the same.

Because the defenses were confident that having taken away the passing reads Milroe could make that all they had to do was run blitz, contain him and roll up the play.
It was so bad that in his explosion against LSU the coaches finally just told him to run QB power so he didn’t sit back there frozen and ran downhill.
That worked for one game but OU figured it out immediately and we had nothing else to go to which resulted in his nuclear implosion down the stretch.
At a certain level of QB failure, much like on the OL, nothing else is going to work.
We saw that last year.
