Ty Simpson. Does anyone else have any doubts?

I hear all the positive comments. I'm hoping they are true.

What do you expect?

Maybe another AJ McCarron? Preferably 2012 version.

I would take that.

I feel like he has been and will coached up. I have confidence in Grubb as the OC and playing to Simpson's strengths and not asking him to do things he simply can't do.

Honestly, the offensive line is what will probably tell the tale, specifically the tackles. We've got a solid interior but the tackles are a real question mark. Proctor desperately needs to lose weight. 360 lbs is simply too big to be quick and it's showed. I'm cautiously optimistic about Formby. He struggled early last year but seemed to improve later in the year. Hopefully he can build on that and be solid.

I think Isaiah Horton is going to make a big difference. Teams won't be able to shade coverage to focus on Ryan Williams because Horton is capable of making them pay dearly.

Finally, while Simpson isn't as fast as Milroe, he's still pretty fast and IMO, is a shiftier runner than Milroe was and make guys miss him.

Is all that a "guarantee" Simoson will be successful? Nope, but I'm cautiously optimistic.

I think it's fair to ask where the positivity is coming from. Ty has been at Bama a while. He never won a qb competition. He never had a remarkable performance.

I'm simply asking what are we getting here? Is he another Mac Jones who waited his turn?

Sure but no one here can tell you anything more. We’ll just have to wait and see

You’re a well established troll on this site. That’s the reason I responded with what I did.

I don't get the outrage. I'm asking why we should be optimistic about Ty. That seems like a fair question.

My mind is open.

Sure. He could be average, he could be elite. Seems to have had a great offseason though

The same people who will sunshine pump all offseason will be the ones crashing out if things don't pop off during the season.

I have nothing to base this on - just my "feelings" - so...
I think he will be very good. He can make the throws. He has good escapability. He isn't afraid to make a play. And I will tell you something else - I think we win the SEC this year

I don't think that it's an unreasonable thread. There isn't a lot to go on to determine just how good Simpson can be in SEC play. I don't believe there is anything alarming about the fact that he couldn't win the job before this season. Before everything got out of whack in cfb, his arc would have been perfectly normal. It is (or used to be) ideal for a guy to develop for multiple years before he takes the reigns.

It does seem like he has a strong arm, and can make a lot of throws, and it seems like he's a hard worker, and is very competitive, and is very determined. His teammates and coaches obviously like him.

We don't need the offense to rely so much on him, like was the case with Milroe. We simply need him to manage the game, run the offense with efficiency, and get the ball to our many playmakers, like McCarron, Coker, and Mac did. Now, those guys had great Olines, and run games which helped out a shite ton. Will we have that? We should, but we haven't in a few years now. But we certainly seem to have the dudes and then some.

I think having Grubb there will help him out a lot.

My guess is that he struggles a little bit once we get into SEC play, but not enough to start panicking, but he'll get better with each game, and hopefully down the stretch he starts playing his best ball. Kinda like Coker. So basically opposite of Milroe's God awful arc last year. Anything but that.

One positive thing is that he should have a crew on the other side of the ball to keep other offenses from scoring a lot.

I'm tempering my expectations, but I am indeed cautiously optimistic.

Or, the same ones that said things like "tY cOuLdNt bEaT oUt mILrOe! rUSsElL wILL wIn tHE jOb!" won't give him a chance and will be calling for his head after the first incomplete pass.

If he does have a good to great year, the question will be there. How could two head coaches not put him in when Milroe struggled?

To me he has the tools but always seemed to press when he got put into games. Hopefully he is not looking over his shoulder at the other guys and can be confident in being the qb.

He nearly beat out Milroe as a RSFr. Then, our lovable "Heisman contender" was entrenched and not going anywhere in year one of the new regime. It's not really as baffling as many pretend.

It’s still pretty baffling to me the coaches watched Milroe throw away a playoff chance in Norman.

I can. It happened quickly. It went from 10-3 to 24-3 in maybe 5 or fewer game minutes. Our OL was trash in pass protection. Made no sense to throw a backup out there in throw almost every down mode.

I just wanted a switch at qb during the Tennessee and Oklahoma games, but I’ll stop, don’t want to derail the thread.

I worry more about the tackles playing at an elite level than the qb play this year.
