Mississippi State University plans to break ground soon on the site of a new U.S. Grant Presidential Library, significantly increasing the impact the museum will have on the campus and community, and creating a gateway to welcome visitors to our home.

For those unfamiliar with the campus layout. This will be about a two block walk from the stadium on a highway that cuts through campus.

I don't know I think the Lincoln Lake and monument plaza penis right next to it would be the weirdest

Just a guess, but probably this first part:
quote:

Ulysses S. Grant was the 18th president of the United States. In 1865, as commanding general, Grant led the Union Army to victory in the American Civil War.
quote:

They will tell the story of Ulysses S. Grant’s military and presidential careers and show the pivotal role Mississippi played in both, highlighting Grant’s critical role in unifying the country and prioritizing healing and reconciliation following the war, which allowed the nation to recover and rebuild its strength.

Alongside the new Grant Presidential Library, plans call for a boutique hotel, green spaces and other amenities on Russell Street adjacent to The Mill.

“Mississippi State housing and supporting the Grant Presidential Library delivers a great message of forgiveness, civility, unity, and the advancement of a continued path forward and upward.”

A guy with the largest private collection of Lincoln papers I think also had a bunch of Grant stuff. He did a lot of research at MSU, liked it, and donated all his stuff to MSU and had the presidential library arranged.

In addition to the other reasons, google also says it is because he spent a lot of time in MS, and had the big victory at Vicksburg.

Grant's history in Mississippi doesn't necessarily scream "put his library here." Vicksburg did not celebrate the 4th of July for a century.

How it ended up at MSU is pretty simple. All this stuff was in a room at Southern Illinois University and they did not want to build a library for it. A professor of history at MSU who was an expert on Grant petitioned National Archives and got the collection moved to MSU, later adding enough to become the official Presidential Library.

Tennessee should take their Andrew Jackson papers and make a Presidential Library

Grant had close ties to Missouri and Illinois whereas outside of burning Jackson and shelling Vicksburg into oblivion zero ties to Mississippi much less MSU.

That museum should be somewhere else.

Wow, great context.

Maybe you should write a strongly worded letter to someone who cares

Well seeing as how I’ve never been a part of nor have I ever known anyone who was a part of the Confederacy, doesn’t seem all that weird to me. I mean I guess I have a handful of ancestors a few generations back who wore grey coats. But I’ve also had way more family since then fight on behalf of the US Army so as a Southerner, i can’t say I identify with the guys Grant was fighting.

Apparently, SIU was letting the stuff rot away and the MSU professor was just appalled by it. SIU fought it for a minute, then agreed to give it up. MSU has done a good job with it. Its a pretty good library for a 19th century president, but having a dedicated building will take it up a notch. Right now, its just a dedicated wing of the main MSU library.

Today:

Picture from when it first moved to MSU:

The OP has a weird self-deprecating schtick with respect to anything Mississippi but more specifically MSU. Comes across an apologizer for things the university does. I’m not sure why.
