They never contended for that spot all year. Most of the power teams had zero intention of burning up their teams trying to run that gauntlet for no reason.
Tennessee and Ole Miss had to, to get regionals. LSU approached game 1 to just get Anderson and Eyanson work, and A&M was collateral damage. For the other teams, it was practice and get some rest.
Vandy didn't look right afterwards, and I suspect it took something out of the team to do it.
Texas dropping to #17, just evidence the season was 3 weeks too long for them. They were cooked.
