Have any of yall ever heard of Sawdust Salad. It was something my grandmother made when I was a kid. Its a type of congealed salad. Can't figure out if its a Southern thing, a my family thing, or national thing from back in the past. Sorry to ask a non sports question

I have and yes I do believe it's a southern thing. My dad's side of the family are from Louisiana and my grandmother on that side used to make it all the time. The Texas side of the fam never heard of it so it must be a southeastern dish.

chatgpt to the rescue

"The origin of Sawdust Salad is not precisely documented, but it is widely recognized as a classic Southern U.S. dish from the mid-20th century, particularly popular in the 1950s. It is a layered gelatin-based dessert salad, commonly served at potlucks, family gatherings, and holiday meals in the American South. The name "Sawdust Salad" comes from the visual effect of its top layer, which is often sprinkled with grated cheddar cheese or toasted coconut, resembling sawdust."

It’s called Jello no matter how fancy you try to make it sound.

And cheddar cheese. This sounds potentially nauseating. People in the 60s and 70s had a weird thing with Jello.

Use pistachio pudding instead of the lemon/orange jello & you have Watergate Salad
