Cruise the islands. Anyone here ever done that? If so, any suggestions?

Not a fan of Hawaii. Its expensive for one and the people are not overly friendly. There is good fishing and diving there, but nothing that you can’t do on West Coast of Mexico and Costa Rica. There is some good food, but nothing earth shattering. Some of the military history is good there. It’s a long flight for what you get in my opinion. You will likely end up at a beach resort playing $8 for water and $14 for a beer and hanging out on a rocky beach.

That was my graduation present after graduating from UGA in 2005. Had a blast. Flew in a day early, stayed the last night. First day of the cruise was the Super Bowl which was a huge party on the ship. Day we got off the ship we went to the Pro Bowl back when it was played in Hawaii. Memorable cruise for sure.

It’s different now, but felt like King of the World back then :)

Now, about cruise southern Caribbean taking my kids on their first ever cruise. Excited for their memories they will make

Mrs. Feral and I spent 10 days on Kauai. I'd recommend it if Momma is into hiking and the outdoors. We stayed at an air B&B on Moloaa Bay. Screen walls with curtains and a net over the bed to catch gecko poop from falling on us at night. Fallen coconuts for breakfast and the beach to ourselves. There are a handful of houses on the bay so we probably saw 5 people the entire time we spent on the beach. We spent most of our time on the north shore at Kalalau trail and Waimea Canyon. On the last day we stumbled across some locals holding a ceremony to bless a piece of land they had acquired. They were very welcoming to us and let my wife blow the ceremonial conch. Besides airfare and car rental, I probably spent less than $1,000 the entire time we were there.

Don't know how old Mom is but as long as I've seen you on the boards imma guessing 60+...

For that kinda money I'd cruise Alaska outta Vancouver ( don't go outta Seattle) or a Western Mediterranean cruise... JMO.

Just got back from Maui and Oahu for 10 days.

Turtle Bay is better than Maui IMO

We're flying there and cruising the islands. I'm 69 and she will be 67 in 2 weeks.

Concur 100%, very long flight, pricey, and the natives love/hate relationship with tourists all contributed to making it feel like it wasn’t really worth it. If I had a choice, I’m picking Europe any day over Hawaii.

If you’re gonna go, two words:

North. Shore.

Honolulu blows.

When I went I felt obliged to pay my respects to the Arizona, so we started on WaikikiBeach. We checked out Pearl, Diamond Head, and took a tour of the whole island. We spent the rest of our time at a laid back resort on Maui. Rented a car for a road trip to Hana (and a few miles beyond) and visited Haleakala National Park along with some other low key touristy stuff.

Enjoyed it, but will probably go to Fiji or Bora Bora next time we visit the South Pacific.

Did you go to the Missouri, too?

Saw the Missouri, but did not take the shuttle that gets you to it so you can get on the ship. Same with the USS Bowfin.

Would be worth doing, though, if I go again. The Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum is something I could probably spend an entire day at.

I saw a multi episode tv serial a few years ago about a Hawaii resort. Basically all the staff were gays or thief’s and one of them shat in a guests suitcase

You should do it. It's the most amazing place I've ever been. It will ruin your future beach trips however because the beaches are absolute paradise. We had a friend that lived on the big island and staid with her so we had that expense covered. The beaches on the big island are some of the best. We took a day trip over to Oahu and saw Pearl Harbor. The food and dining is expensive. There was a really good market in Kona that we went to and they had fresh sushi every day. We ate there at least once a day. You can also hang out at the nice resorts as long as you don't use the chairs at the pool. Some of the locals were not friendly to tourist but not that bad. I seemed to notice it more around Hilo.
