Who really cares. From what I have seen, the loudest anti-gay voices always seem to be the closeted gay guys who are conflicted between their true desires and the brain-washing of fairy tales from their youth.

You haven't found that at all. That's a reverse psychology ploy that you use to try and control what other people think, say, and do. If he called a gay person that it would be worth an apology. Saying it about someone who is almost certainly heterosexual from a 100 feet away with crowd noise is not.

I'll be the contrarian here and take the fringe position that bigotry is wrong, and that if you use a slur against someone at a public event while performing your job as a representative of a university, you actually should apologize for that and accept criticism for doing so.
