Robots calling balls/strikes

I used to like the human element but it seems like SEC umpires get worse every year.
They're always trying to inject themselves into the action. That geriatric Jeff Head is the worst.
That is my melt for today.

Hard to complain about SEC officials when MLB umpires are supposed to be the standard and are famously awful at their jobs. The whole sport from the top down just suffers from incompetence and an unwillingness to address the problem because the concept of randomness is somehow an inherent charm of the game.

My friend that played d1 baseball said it would make good catchers pointless if they go to a robot. I never thought about that before.

While I agree, it is still better than the new world of college basketball with the incessant stoppage of play for the refs to go watch super slo-mo TV courtside to determine if they should upgrade an accidental elbow to a flagrant 1 (whatever the hell that is).

Why is that?

He said pitch framing is too essential and would reduce the need for that skill set.

it was used in spring training and it was met with rave reviews. They add the surprise element like in tennis and show it on the jumbotron as its coming in and if its a strike or not.
Said it didnt slow the pace one bit.

Because if everybody knows the strike zone exactly then there are a limited amount of options that can happen. The pitches will be easier to place and nobody will ever swing at a ball.

I’ve often wondered about sweeping curve balls catching a piece of the plate and caught way off the plate.. that technically sb a strike but isn’t called one right now

Help me better understand….
Isn’t a strike a strike?

I think he meant to say ..
“make good catchers pointless..”
because some catchers frame the shite out of pitches.. and you wouldn’t be able to do that anymore

Please, God no, don't let that happen. This ain't "Jetson's Baseball" - keep the human element. Lord knows The Hogs have been scroogied many times by refs/umps AND reviews...but MLB is unbearable to watch.

Disagree. That's a bad take. Give me the robots.

It’s time for the ABS in the SEC and MLB. It’s ridiculous that you have to live with some of the ball/strike calls. The thing is, though, that you don’t have to live with them. Just use ABS.

Should have been done years ago, the pitches right on the margins will still be 50/50 balls but that's fine, they are today.
Robots calling the pitches would eliminate the bad calls on really egregious pitches that get called blatantly wrong, something only humans can do.
It would also eliminate the bitching as the computerized system is unbiased, and wouldn't be making calls based on emotion or the crowd noise or what inning it was, etc. There would be no meta-game bullying. Would introduce consistency across the game, which ultimately would help both pitchers and batters play better.
Embracing mistakes as "the human element" may be the dumbest argument ever. It's like dismissing e. coli in your food as the "natural element" or some bs.

Sanitizing the game with robots takes the human element out of the game and bastardizes America's Past Time to 9 innings of Alexa. Just because you bitch about a strike here and there is no reason to redo the game. The pitch clock already is an egregious affront to the game as it is. Dumbest argument for it ever.
