Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said "culture has won some games" during the coach's four-year Longhorns tenure, but college football legend Cam Newton took aim at those comments in his latest podcast episode. The former Heisman Trophy winner argued NIL and Texas boosters are just as big of a factor in the Longhorns' recent success as the culture cultivated by Sarkisian.

"Look, Coach Sarkisian, all that stuff is cool," Newton said. "Building a culture does take time, but having the boosters attached to the University of Texas also helps. Hello? They have the No. 1 recruiting class in the nation and probably the No. 1 spend in the nation. C'mon dog. C'mon bro. I'm not trying to discredit the importance of building a culture. It takes time. But come on. Any great coach knows that they need great players. Nowadays, these players are a great expense. We're going to look back at how college sports were impacted by NIL and find a commonality that teams who are winning are spending a lot of money. I'm not going to be the bearer of bad news, but I'll be the processor of real news."

Texas ranks No. 1 on the college football NIL collective leaders for 2025 at an estimated $22.2 million. The Longhorns secured the No. 1 recruiting class for 2025, the first time the program has finished atop the recruiting rankings in the modern recruiting era (since 2000).

"Coach Sarkisian, respectfully, what you've been able to do at Texas is admirable," Newton said. "I'm not only a fan of you but also your wife. She's fly. Matthew McConaughey was one of my childhood heroes and still someone I look up to. Vince Young. But Coach Sarkisian, my man, understand that the only way you're able to assemble those rosters is not only about culture but spending that money. Yo, bro, understand that the (money) is making athletes even consider it."

If anybody would know about the importance of "boosters", it's Cam Newton.

Are you trying to create some hate towards Cam Newton? This is not some Breaking News, we know money is the reason programs like Texas, Oregon, and OSU are winning, their pockets are deeper than most.

So he said great players are more important than culture. He’s right.

Doesn't seem provocative nor uniquely insightful.

Which, as an AU guy, is how I find Cam most of the time. Occasionally he'll make waves with a comment good or bad, but usually I find him to be like most former players who aren't dumb but give themselves a little too much credit for not being dumb, if that makes sense.

He's smart enough to be interviewed about the game and current events and it be interesting enough - but I don't think he's insightful enough to fill hours of airtime on a podcast (there are a lot of former athletes in this boat). He'll make a reasonable argument nobody disagrees with (like this one) but hammer it for 15 minutes like he's breaking exciting new ground.

Cam desperately trying to be relevant for his podcast.

The players we recruited had NIL offers in other places and chose Texas. If you think Texas just outbids everyone for every recruit we have you are naive. Its an aspect for sure but I know personally kids that have come in naming their price and Sark has not wanted to pursue them for one important reasons

If you start with only money as a recruit thats likely all that will drive you. The next year you will be coming back for more and in this sport you can transfer immediately. so the ROI of that NIL package is useless if a Fresh take the money and then leaves the next year.

These colleges are run by smart people who know how to negotiate and can spot a kid and his agent / family only focused on money a mile away. The majoriy of those kids Texas is going to pass on unless they are 5 star.

The irony right. A&M gets the #1 class and non stop shite posting saying everyone was bought, and we don’t deserve it.

tu gets a class that was confirmed paid for, the same guys here praising Sark and the university.

Cam made the same comment about money buying recruits that was made of us, but the guys here are flaming Cam instead bc it was horn.

Cam Newton would know the benefits of boosters.

Nobody gives a shite what you think Cam.

This dude was dead and buried (his own fault) and ESPN brought him back to life.

That's brief but I'll still give it a 9.0

Not bad at all

This Texas grad has never even tried to deny what Cam is asserting. In fact, let's just go ahead and say it - he's right.

7-win Sark right? Wasn't that the nickname before?

What about some of the questionable calls and (west coast) decisions we've seen under Sark? Failed 4th down conversions, getting burned on special teams plays, can't seem to gain one yard... etc.

No doubt. Sark is definitely at the right place at the right time.

What’s the point of paying a lot of $ to get a kid to go there if he’s just going to transfer when he’s not happy. Maybe culture has something to do with it?

Great take otherwise!

All coaches know that. It’s not unique to Texas. Unless you’re desperate nobody wants those players.

The next words out of Newton's mouth that I put any credibility in will be the first.

I didn't read that, but I thought Cam would love the "gay vibe" prevalent in Austin. They have dildo parties for goodness sakes.
