Alabama has become the latest state to introduce a bill that would create a competitive advantage for its collegiate athletes. Alabama state representative Joe Lovvorn introduced legislation in the House on Tuesday that would make NIL earnings exempt from Alabama’s individual income tax.

The move follows a similar bill popping up in the Georgia state Senate earlier this month. Alabama currently has a state income tax with rates ranging from 2% to 5%. This bill would also put Alabama and Auburn on equal footing, as Tennessee, Florida and Texas are SEC states with no income tax.

So they get free school, six to seven figure income, and the state carves out an income tax exemption just for them.

Honestly, these kids can frick right off. I hate them now.

For years Georgia copied everything we did, and now we're copying them.

So many of these kids have no business making this much money without any guardrails. We have players who are no where near NFL caliber making more than any of us and they won’t be making shite once they leave college.

The “real world” schadenfreude is going to be a guilty pleasure to see some of these NIL darlings blow it all and never make the NFL. I’m sorry, it just is. Bye bye to being treated like a king and having no actual obligations! Hello one bedroom apartment!

Unfortunately bills like this one is necessary in order to keep pace with schools like Georgia.

To be fair, the Georgia bill was inspired by Nick himself.

Chess not checkers. Mention it to Georgia booster friend, so they get to eat the "are you serious?" incredulity from the public and Alabama just gets to be a responder to the circumstance.

Say what you want about the NFL but their players just pay taxes like anybody else in their state who makes earned income (if the state has an income tax).

I understand NIL, I embrace it now, and I'm at peace with it. One day, it'll get sorted out in a way that makes sense. But that shite right there? frick that, and frick the politicians who support it.

I want my fricking earnings exempt from taxes too.

This is so freaking ridiculous. I really hope every other state decides to take a stand and not go down this path.

Dumb athletes who don’t go to class, who transfer to a higher bidder making hundreds of thousands or millions, paying no taxes.

I think we all see the reasons for this and it has everything to do with trying to remain competitive in the recruiting game. Some states have no income tax so they are already a leg up on the rest. You often hear about pro athletes choosing their new team in free agency largely because the new team’s state has no tax.

Trump has been blathering about doing away with the federal income tax and replacing it with tariff revenues since the campaign. But anyone who really knows how things operate behind the scenes KNOWS that this will never happen.

Even if Trump did so it would not hold because the next President could change it back. All the people happy about the possibility forget the federal income tax is there via a Constitutional amendment.

This bill I posted only focuses on state income tax but some states are pushing for a jock tax like in the pros. So even the states that do not have state income tax players would still have to pay tax on away games as a % of their earnings.

Thinking about calling Gerald Allen tomorrow tbh. This is silly. We should not be making income tax carve outs for some of the most privileged 18-22yo men in the world. They don't have to pay for the school, their textbooks, their food, the roof over their heads, they can get free nike gear any time they want, they get paid 6-7 figures. At some point the insanity has got to stop. I don't begrudge them making money but if I'm paying state income taxes then by God they should be too.
