Better than expected? Too early to really tell?
Someone clue me in, please. He looks like a really nice guy. I hope he is a big success.

LSU has a National Championship in basketball to their credit.
How many does Auburn have?

LSU has claimed a national championship for the 1935 season (pre-NCAA tournament), but not on the basis of any determination by an external selector. LSU is the only school that officially claims a national championship on the basis of a win in the American Legion Bowl, an event that made no claim to determine a national champion.
Even 1941 Alabama had SOMEBODY outside of Tuscaloosa naming them champion.

Pretty good for a guy with no NCAA tournament wins to his name. The concern for UK fans has to be, if losing at home to Bama is his peak, where will he be when he regresses to the mean?

As for OP:
Yes. I don't know any Kentucky fans who expected him to beat multiple highly ranked teams in his first season with a roster he built from scratch through the portal. What's appreciated is they're well coached. The offense is really fun to watch and is an actual modern, functioning offense. Defense leaves something to be desired but I could see that changing with the guys he'll bring in with time to recruit/develop.
IMO maybe too early to tell how good he can be. But he's got a really good early start.

Better than expected?
It'll be interesting to watch his roster construction with some blue chippers and his apparent good eye on talent evaluation in the portal.
If things didn't change we'd more than likely be 0-5 in conference play, so not to early to tell he's better than what we had.

@BluegrassBelle and TDCat, thanks for clueing me in. I hope Pope turns out to be a huge success. I like how he spent time with that fellow in the wheel chair recently.

Auburn has as many national championships in basketball as LSU has - which is zero
**if you are referring to women's basketball - then congratulations, you got me
Since it appears you like history here is some for you:
Auburn is currently ranked #1 in men's basketball for the 2nd time in program history
LSU has been playing basketball since 1908 and has never been ranked #1

He's referring to LSU's self claimed "title."
LSU claims a national championship for the 1934–35 season, but not on the basis of any determination by an external selector or outcome of any contest purporting to determine a national champion.

Someone should make bacon out of all that salt you are producing.

Why's Arkansas fans mad at us? We told you who Cal was before you bought him from us. Buyers remorse?
