This is so incredibly stupid. No way does Arizona State deserve a bye by winning a shitty conference.

The CFP committee said that they would look at revising the format in the off-season. Still 5 highest rated conference champions with an auto-bid but the seeding would be based on an actual 1-12 ranking.

Why?

The byes aren't about rewarding Boise State or ASU over Texas or PSU. They're about rewarding Oregon and UGA (the teams that won their conferences) over Texas and PSU (the teams they beat).

So what if the ACC, Big 12 and non-P4 champs suck and lose? The point is to give the Big 10 and SEC champs a benefit for playing in and winning their championship game. We don't want teams to rest players in CCG's to prepare for the playoff because they're getting a bye win or lose.

Just pick the 12 best teams although I’m not sure that any of the other teams on the bubble would have fared any better than the ones that lost.

give the the Big 10 and SEC champs auto bids into the final 4. if anyone else cries then just leave the NCAA and make the national champion the winner of the game between those two conference champs

Texas got an easier draw than Georgia

I disagree.

UGA didn't have to play anyone to make the round of 8. Texas had to play clemson. Texas having to play is harder.

UGA has to play ND in their next game. Texas had to play ASU. UGA's might be harder, but it's not hugely different.

UGA would then play PSU. Texas would play Oregon or OSU. MUCH harder for Texas.

UGA has the easier draw by far.

No. It will dilute CCGs and also allow notre dame to get a bye. Keeping this structure is worth it alone for fricking notre dame.

This is simple.

Kill the byes.

Either go to 8 and kill the byes or go to 16 and kill the byes.

Byes are stupid.

By doing this, you kill the CCG's.

Why would UGA or Texas want to play in the SECCG without a bye?

Both would be in the playoff if they opt out. Playing an extra game in the CCG would just give them injuries that those who didn't make the CCG wouldn't have.

The chance at getting a bye is the ONLY reason for a team comfortably in the playoff to want to play in a conference championship game.

They'll go to 14 and keep the byes for the two top rated conference champions. Which will be . . .

No, you wouldn't.

Tie the P4 conference champions to hosting guaranteed(top 8 seed).

No byes and conference championship matters a lot.....guaranteed to host.

Byes are dumb.

yeah you would.

UGA, Texas, OU and PSU would all be top 8 seeds in a 16 team playoff win or lose in their championship game. The game would literally mean nothing to them.

So they'd rest EVERYONE in the CCG's to not get injured. The games would be second and third stringers playing for no benefit. Winning gives each team nothing, so avoiding injury becomes the goal of the game.

The CCG is an EXTRA game that those like Ohio State, Tennessee or others who make the playoff don't have to play. That's an extra chance at getting players hurt. If you want the teams taking part to actually play their starters in those games, you have to give them a reason to.

Right now that reason is to earn a bye. Without that carrot, there's no reason UGA would PLAY Carson Beck (who got injured in the CCG) or for Texas to play Ewers or for ANY key player to take the field.

If you want the playoff to not reward CCG's... you have to accept that teams will rest their players in CCG's because there is no reward. This isn't rocket science... it's common sense.

Yes, it would. It'd mean a conference championship and it will mean a higher seed.

It's like saying conference tournaments mean nothing.

The problem is the seeding. It needs to be done NCAA basketball style and it needs to be done one time, the day after conference championship games.

Then those games will mean a TON. They will actually guarantee a host and a higher seed (nobody would know where Texas/UGA was ranked by the committee going INTO the game).

These are simple fixes that would greatly help this whole structure since we've decided on a real playoff now, like all other sports.

Div2 playoffs do not have byes. Even in the NFL, they are down to one team with a bye. Byes are stupid.

This was the only competitive game we’ve had in the playoffs this year and one of the best playoff games ever

Neither of these matters at all when it comes to an injury.

Football isn't basketball. Players get hurt every single game. It's not a matter of if someone get's hurt, it's who gets hurt and how bad the injury is.

If round 1 is going to be a home game win or lose, and round 2 will be a neutral site game win or lose... then no team is going to risk an injury to an important player in a meaningless game.

The only reason UGA risked Carson Beck was to get a bye. Carson Beck is the reason why teams won't risk key players in CCG's without a bye being a reward. No team wants to risk their starting QB for being seeded 1-2 places higher (Texas would have been the 2 seed with a CCG win, and a 3 seed with a loss).

I'm fine with your idea if you do away with CCG's. But it won't work if you keep them. Playing in the CCG will be viewed as a negative, not a positive if there's no potential bye.
